THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITS

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourself.

, THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITSMeantime Sale Fetches Big Bucks (Greenwich, England) – Last year Meantime Brewing shocked the UK’s craft brewing community, when it was announced that they’d agreed to be acquired by global giant SABMiller. Reports at the time estimated the sale to be worth between £30 million and £50 million. But the truth, which was reveled recently in SABMiller’s annual report, is that Meantime’s founder and owners pocketed an amazing £120million in that transaction – not bad for a company with an annual profit of just £1.5 million in 2014.

The Bruery Terreux Tasting Room Opens (Anaheim, CA) – The Bruery’s Wild Ale spinoff Bruery Terreux has opened its own tasting room specializing in what they reportedly refer to as “wildly traditional bières,” and most of their beers will be wood-aged. The Terreux tasting room is open from noon until 10 p.m. every day

Words To Drink By (Ridgewood, NJ) – “24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case… Coincidence?”

Stephen Wright – Comedienne

A Sign Of The Times (Baltimore, MD) – The Brewers Association of Maryland has announced a change in bylaws to restrict voting memberships and board representation to what they deem independent craft brewers – a clear reaction to recent brewery acquisitions by multi-national corporations. “It is virtually impossible for large, multi-national industrial breweries to share the same interests as small, local, independent craft breweries,” said Ben Savage, President of the Brewers Association of Maryland and CMO of Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick. “We wanted to be proactive in making sure that the voting voice of our membership truly represented Maryland craft beer.”

Artificial Intelligence Beer (London) -The UK-based Intelligent X Brewing might possibly be claim they are the first company in the world that uses a computer algorithm to help brew a better pint. According to the Huffington Post, the AI (code named Abi) “has been fed information by world-class brewers to help inform decisions about variables such as ingredients and methods.” Then customers are invited to contact Intelligence X at a special feedback site if they’d like to suggest improvements – and that feedback will be incorporated back into their algorithm, allowing the company (they hope) to keep up with the public’s ever-evolving taste.
