Pricy Drinking – Six Craft Beers We Can’t Afford

Many breweries nowadays, release special-edition beers and some of them can command exorbitant prices. Writing for Yahoo Food, Devin Pratt recently came up with six of what he explains as “the most expensive beers in the world.” And we have his list of seriously pricy beers for you to peruse.

Some of these we’ve heard of and others we’ve not – but one thing’s for sure – we can’t afford any of them.

, Pricy Drinking – Six Craft Beers We Can’t AffordSamuel Adams Utopias – Price: $150 for 750 ml ($ .20 per ml)

Many of you are probably familiar with this title…right? First launched in 2002, Sam Adams releases these special 28% ABV American Strong Ales every two years. Each Utopia release is aged in brandy, bourbon, and Scotch casks for up to 18 years and it’s a relatively small run and highly collectable. Is it any good? Frankly we haven’t a clue – our special promotional bottles were probably lost in the mail.

, Pricy Drinking – Six Craft Beers We Can’t AffordBrewDog’s Sink the Bismarck! – Price: $80 for 375 ml ($ .21 per ml)

BrewDog generated a lot of early buzz back in 2010 when they first released this 41% ABV Quadruple IPA. It’s ridiculously strong, and pricy as well, but we’d hype it, if they wanted to send us a bottle.

Schorschbräu’s Schorschbock 57 – Price: $275 / 330 ml ($ .83 per ml)

This Teutonic classic is a very, very, very limited release and has been billed as “the strongest beer in the world.” First produced in 2011, Schorschbock 57 is a 110-proof Eisenbock – and there are only 36 bottles in existence – which probably explains why we weren’t shipped one.

, Pricy Drinking – Six Craft Beers We Can’t AffordCarlsberg’s Jacobsen Vintage No. 1 – Price: $400 / 375 ml ($1.06 per ml)

The first in a trilogy of limited editions created by Carlsberg’s Jacobsen brewhouse in Denmark,Jacobsen Vintage No. 1 is a 10.5% ABV Oak barrel-aged Barleywine. Each series features artwork from a noted artist, which still doesn’t explain why these beers are so pricy. But the fact that only 600 bottles were produced in 2008 might.

BrewDog’s The End of History Price: $765 / 330 ml ($2.31 per ml)

BrewDog makes another appearance on Yahoo’s list with End of History, a 55% ABV Blond Belgian Ale that comes in a stuffed squirrel or stoat that was specially created by a taxidermist for this limited edition beer. We did not receive a promotional bottle of this beer either – and we’re extremely thankful that we didn’t.

, Pricy Drinking – Six Craft Beers We Can’t AffordNail Brewing’s Antarctic Nail AlePrice: $1,850 / 500 ml (highest winning bid at auction) ($3.70 per ml)

Australian-based Nail Brewing’s 10% ABV Pale Ale was brewed with melted ice from Antarctic icebergs. But at $1,850 a bottle, it might be smarter to just fund your own polar expedition.
