The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – May 13, 2015

We can’t believe it’s May already…So much has happened this year and it doesn’t appear that things are going to be slowing down any time soon. But no worries  Rumor Mill is always on the case, keeping you plugged in to all the craft beer news that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you absolutely don’t want to miss that.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – May 13, 2015CRUSTACEAN ALE ARRIVES UP NORTH (Baie-Comeau, Canada) – We’ve seen all kinds of unusual ingredients used to brew beers in the states, but we’re not sure we’ve seen this one. Microbrasserie St-Pancrace, a coastal brewery some 470 miles east of Montreal, has expanded craft beer’s horizons yet again with the introduction of a beer brewed with a coveted Côte-Nord delicacy – the crab. Eater Montreal reports that “Crâââbe Bitter comes in at 5.1% alcohol by volume with, apparently, a subtle note of crab.”

BAHA’S CRAFT BEER SCENE BLOSSOMS (Mexico) – It’s no surprise that craft beer in Mexico has grown exponentially and USA Today is reporting that the Baja region is fast becoming a hotspot. Once the land of indistinguishable generic Lagers, new craft breweries are now found all over the peninsula and craft beer tourism is growing. See what happens when a region shares borders with San Diego…?

BETTER HEAD (Eventually Everywhere, USA)  An Indiegogo-funded startup, Fizzics has a new product that they hope you’ll want to support and it’s based on the concept that better head = better beer. Said to be compatible with just about every bottle or can on the market, Fizzics uses a patented infusion technique to deliver a denser, bubblier head to even the most worthless bargain basement beer and there’s even a built-in tap!

EMPIRE FARMSTEAD BREWERY TO BREAK GROUND THIS FRIDAY (Cazenovia, NY)  David Katleski, our friend and the owner of Empire Brewing in Syracuse, will begin building his long envisaged $5.9 million Empire Farmstead Brewery this Friday. David championed legislation that now allows future operations such as his, advantageous tax breaks and financial assistance. His actions paved the way for future farmstead breweries to flourish in the state and we wish him much success.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN DRINKING LATELY (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all the breweries who ship us beer from time to time. It’s always great to sample the brews that we write about and it helps to give us a better feel for what’s happening out there. Last night, we hit up a new year-round brew that we recently received from Berghoff Brewery. Berghoff IPA is this heritage brewery’s first take on the new American IPA and it’s a 6.5% ABV celebration of hops that’s progressive and deserving.
