The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – November 10, 2014

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

Obama Attempts To Mend Congressional Fences With Beer (Washington, DC) – After the losses his party took at the polls last Tuesday, President Obama held a “make nice” congressional pow-wow with the new leadership Friday – and he gave them a parting gift. According to The Hill, “members of Congress filing out of the West Wing were seen carrying large brown bags that, according to a source, carried the president’s home-bottled brew.”

Maybe It’s Because the Beer Blows (Everywhere, USA) – CNBC posted an article over the weekend that’s worthy of checking out for a number of unfortunate reasons. In the provocatively titled Elitism, or something else? Millennials and the war on Big Beer, reporter Nicholas Duva suggests (among other things) that the millennials’ attraction to craft beer is partly an act of rebellion  a rejection of the beers that their parents embraced with a tinge of anti-capitalism thrown in. That the millennials’ shift to serious beer might actually reflect a refinement of taste is barely touched upon. The article’s analysis as to the generation’s shift to craft beer comes off as both shallow and dismissive  and millennials deserve to be pissed.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – November 10, 2014American Brewing Hit the Books Again (Edmonds, WA) – American Brewing has a history of brewing beers tied to comic book conventions. They brewed a specialty beer last year in support of the Emerald City Comicon Convention and they just released Courage American Wheat in support of the Jet City Comic Show that took place in Tacoma, Washington, over the weekend.

Craft Beer Variety Packs (Los Angeles, CA)  Our friend (and ACB contributor) John Verive wrote a fun and informative piece on Craft Beer Variety Packs that you should check out. John’s a great writer and we always enjoy his take on things  and his coverage of craft beer’s growing variety pack trend is terrific. Also check out John’s Beer Of Tomorrow site while you’re at it – the dude gets it.

ACB Beer Week Alerts (Everywhere, USA) – In our ongoing effort to help you plan where you need to be at any given time – we’ve introduced regular beer week alerts. San Diego Beer Week and Houston Beer Week both kicked off last Friday, and both will run through the 16th.
