My Favorite North Texas Beers of 2013

North Texas saw an explosion of new breweries this year, and with so many new beers, it was difficult choosing only three. These beers represent the growing talent in our metroplex and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to enjoy a pint or two at these three breweries.

, My Favorite North Texas Beers of 2013The Duke – Peticolas Brewing Company

Since the day Michael Peticolas opened his brewery, he has produced some of the most delicious and award-winning (GABF & otherwise) brews in this country. This year, he released The Duke, a smooth and subtly hoppy barleywine. This limited release pays homage to his former glory days of law school and the endless nights drinking with good friends. His classmate and drinking partner Brett Allen Duke was the inspiration for this beer. And like law school, this beer will knock you down with a 12% ABV. As Peticolas likes to say, The Duke is the Truth.

, My Favorite North Texas Beers of 2013Mosaic IPA – Community Beer Company

Community opened its doors during Christmas of 2012 and within their first year, they produced a GABF award-winning beer. While the Public Ale won gold, it’s the Mosaic IPA that I can’t get enough of. This IPA is light, crisp, and fruity. The Mosaic IPA is so tasty and friendly to the taste buds that after one sip, you’ll jump aboard the hop wagon. While not a GABF winner (yet!), the Mosaic IPA was voted 2013 Best Beer of the Region and I wholeheartedly agree.

, My Favorite North Texas Beers of 2013Goatman – Lakewood Brewing Company

Belgian roots and Texas brewed. Lakewood has one of the best brewery tours in the city and great beers at the tap. Recently, they released the third brew in their Limited Legendary Series called Goatman. This beer is an India Black Lager with a flavor similar to a German schwartzbier. Legend has it that the Goatman, a mysterious horned creature, haunts the jogging trails around White Rock Lake waiting to terrorize his victims. This dark treat is both bitter, malty, and gives you a chill like the creature it is named for.
