In an effort to cash in on a growing number of health conscious consumers, many of whom are abandoning beer for lifestyle reasons, Widmer Brothers is introducing what it is calling a ‘superfoods’ beer.
So what are superfoods anyweay and why would Widmer Brothers want them in a beer?
According to LiveScience, “Superfoods are foods (mostly plant-based but also some fish and dairy), that are thought to be nutritionally dense and thus good for one’s health…
“Blueberries, salmon, kale and acai are just a few examples of foods that have garnered the ‘superfood’ label. However, there are no set criteria for determining what is and what is not a superfood, according to the American Heart Association.”
“Superfoods don’t have their own food group,” said Despina Hyde, a registered dietician at New York University’s Langone Medical Center. “As a dietician, I think ‘superfood’ is more of a marketing term for foods that have health benefits.”

But whether a blatant marketing move on the brewery’s part, or a call to a healthier directive, Widmer Brothers, a Portland, Oregon-based Craft Brew Alliance property, hopes to capitalize on superfoods’ perceived mojo with a new year-round release.
Enter Widmer Brothers Süperweizen, its new superfoods beer that is rich in antioxidants and clocks in at 4.2% ABV and only 124 calories.
Packed with blueberries, goji berries, goldenberries, acai berries, black carrot, and ginseng, this low-ABV, low-calorie Wheat Ale is described by the brewery as “bright and crisp with notes of berry and a refreshing finish.”
“People today are hyper aware of what they’re eating and drinking,” said Steven Hallstone, senior brand manager for Widmer Brothers Brewing….
“We wanted to create a refreshing beer that folks could reach for after a hike, a run, or—in our current times—after an in-home workout. We’re not making any health claims about Süperweizen, but if you are planning on drinking a post-workout beer, why not drink one that tastes great and is loaded with superfood ingredient.”
Whether Süperweizen is actually a healthier alternative to your favorite IPA, remains to be seen. But no matter if it proves beneficial or not, Widmer Brothers is now rolling out its newest core offering in 6-packs of 12oz cans throughout the Pacific Northwest.
