We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.
So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourself.
New Holland Brewing Gets A New Look (Holland, MI) – New Holland is refreshing their vibe and will be introducing a new look this year, with a portfolio-wide packaging update due to hit markets in March. The new imaging stays true to the brewery’s colors, brand characters, and label art, while advancing their shelf presence and readability.
Big Beer / Craft Beer Turf War? (San Diego, CA) – The world’s biggest beer company is creating an uproar by attempting to stake its own claim in one of craft beer’s most important cities. Fortune is reporting that AB InBev-owned 10 Barrel Brewing wants to open an establishment in East San Diego and that last week the city’s “Downtown Community Planning Council approved a neighborhood use permit for the facility, the first of many steps to make it a reality.” Understandably, the San Diego Brewers Guild jumped ugly and we’ll be watching this development closely.
Words To Drink By (Los Angeles, CA) – “Edges hook people and not everyone is gonna like you…if you’re not pissing off someone, you’re not doing it right.”
Bob Lefsetz – Music Analyst & Writer
Looking For A Great Head Brewing Gig? (Washington, DC) – Because there is a rare Head Brewer opening at Atlas Brew Works – and you can find out more about it HERE.
Cascade Crosses The Pond (Portland, OR) – Looks like Cascade Brewing’s award-winning Northwest Sours are now available in the UK and the world will never be the same. Partnering with James Clay, the first batch of Strawberry, Blackcap Raspberry, Sang Noir and Cranberry have already touched down in the United Kingdom and we’re happy for all involved.
Shocker – Iowa Legislators Do The Right Thing! (Sioux City, IA) – In what is being seen as a concerning departure from form, Iowa’s Senate Committee has passed a bill which will allow brewpubs to sell up to 32 ounce growler-fills directly to consumers. 9News is reporting that “in past years, brew pubs had to sell their product to distributors, only to have to buy it back at a higher price, to abide by Iowa’s three tier system regulating beer distribution.” This new bill circumvents this needlessly expensive step.
