Stroh’s, an 170-year old beer brand that many of us remember from underage exploits in high school is growing it’s linage in “Mother City” and introducing a new Detroit-brewed lager.
Set to debut on August 12 Stroh’s Detroit Lager is but the latest “newbie’ from a storied brewery that, in the age of craft beer, many have forgotten.
Stroh’s was founded in Detroit in 1850 and the Stroh family ran the company until Los Angeles-based Pabst Brewing purchased it in 1999. It returned to Detroit in 2016 with the Bohemian Pilsner release.
And in 2016 Pabst partnered with a contract brewery in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood called Brew Detroit and has been brewing batches of Stroh’s Bohemian-Style Pilsner, a beer derived from an original 1850’s Stroh’s recipe.
In 2018 Stroh’s introduced a seasonal wheat called Spirit Witbier. It was the third new recipe for Stroh’s since the brand returned to Detroit in 2016 and now comes Stroh’s Detroit Lager.
Brewed with traditional corn grits to give the beer a “piercingly crisp finish,” Stroh’s 4.6% ABV Detroit Lager is, according to the company, made with “caramel malts that lend themselves to a soft golden hue, and a subtle sweetness that compliments the hop bill, resulting in a refreshingly balanced.”
And it’s upcoming release is yet another sign that Pabst, now a Los Angeles-based a holding company which contract brews over two dozen beer brands include its own flagship Pabst Blue Ribbon, is hoping to revitalize Stroh’s presence and sometimes a new beer will do that.
“The brand is a part of Detroit’s history, so it’s important that we uphold the values of the city and continue to make a positive contribution to the community here,” says Rachel Keeton, associate brand manager for Stroh’s. “Working with local people and businesses to create Detroit Lager has been a true collaboration that symbolizes our desire play a meaningful role in Detroit’s future.”
According to the Metro Times Stroh’s “tapped Detroit-based designer Jesse Kassel for the Detroit Lager label design and an update for the Bohemian Pilsner. The oxblood and gold Detroit Lager label is a tribute to Detroit City FC, of which Stroh’s is a sponsor.”
