Stone Brewing has built their reputation on the backs of big hoppy IPAs, so it may trouble some that they’re now promoting Mexican lagers and spicy beer cocktails.

So what the hell is a michelada?

While some of you might be familiar with the michelada, many beer lovers are not. A michelada is a Mexican beer cocktail (think Bloody Mary but with beer) that’s made by combining a light lager with tomato and lime juice, hot sauce and sometimes Worcestershire sauce to create a tart, salty, spicy, beer concoction. It’s traditionally served in a squat chilled glass rimmed with coarse salt., Stone Brewing Gets Into The Michelada Mix

Similar to the  much simpler ‘chelada’ which just adds lime and salt, the michelada evolved as a way to mask cheap Mexican lagers with all kinds of additives which allowed locals and tourists to drink beer as early as breakfast, without being branded an alcoholic.

Obviously Stone Brewing, whose headquarter in Escondido, California is not that far from the Mexican border, wants you to use its chelada-inspired Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager in your DIY michelada and they’ve taken things to the next level with their own ready-made Stone Michelada Mix.

This from Stone…

“Shortly after brewing Stone Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager, we noticed fans and Team Stone alike using the beer as a base for homemade Michelada. So we figured it only made sense to create our own michelada mix and share the glory of this beer cocktail with the masses.”

“This mix contains just the right amount of tomato juice, hot sauce, peppers and few other special spices to help you craft the finest michelada you’ve ever had, right at home. You could technically mix it with any beer you’d like, but if it’s anything but Buenaveza, it’s not quite perfect.”

Available in festive 32oz bottles online as well as at its brewing compound Stone Michelada Mix is soy and vegan free…so there’s that too.
