US Surgeon General Calls For Updated Cancer Warning On Alcohol
On January, 3, US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a series of recommendations to increase awareness of alcohol-related cancer cases and deaths, including updating warning labels on alcohol beverages.
Alcohol consumption is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States, after tobacco and obesity, increasing risk for at least seven types of cancer. While scientific evidence for this connection has been growing over the past four decades, less than half of Americans recognize it as a risk factor for cancer.
The direct link between alcohol consumption and cancer risk is well-established for at least seven types of cancer including cancers of the breast, colorectum, esophagus, liver, mouth (oral cavity), throat (pharynx), and voice box (larynx), regardless of the type of alcohol (e.g., beer, wine, and spirits) that is consumed. For breast cancer specifically, 16.4% of total breast cancer cases are attributable to alcohol consumption.

Heineken Announces PlansTo Build New Brewery In Dubai
Signaling a profound change in the largely Muslim country made up of seven emirates, the Dutch multinational brewing giant, Heineken NV has announced the construction on its first large scale brewery in the UAE according to Esquire.
Each emirate, all of them monarchies, has its own laws regarding alcohol consumption. For example, Sharjah is a dry emirate where drinking alcohol is still illegal, but overall, the country has seen its once prohibitive alcohol restrictions liberalized considerably over the last few years.
In the majority of the country, residents and tourists can now purchase alcohol in licensed stores and consume it in licensed restaurants, bars, and clubs. Tourists can also get a free one-month license to drink in Dubai. Residents need a personal liquor license to purchase alcohol from licensed stores and drink at home.
Planned to break ground in 2025, the joint venture between Heineken NV and Dubai’s MMI, the new brewery is scheduled to open in 2027. Heineken currently owns over 165 breweries in more than 70 countries.
