Hey, no one’s perfect…as we at American Craft Beer understand better than most. That said, there are some brewing ideas out there that are insanely misguided.
So welcome to another BAD IDEAS IN BREWING…and we’re blaming the Brits for this one.
Here’s the Deal
We’ve never been fans of Corn Dog and Funnel Cake Beer. Or ridiculous concepts like Beer Tea. Hatchet Hurling Bars will never be a good idea. And we’d rather drink windshield washer fluid than ever submit to Deer Antler Beer.
But in the world of brewing concepts, ideas that nobody was asking for and nobody needs, beer brewed with Yorkshire pudding (in this case two different types of Yorkshire pudding) is a sobering stunner.
What is Yorkshire pudding anyway?
Yorkshire pudding is a common English side dish consisting of a baked pudding made from batter consisting of eggs, flour, and milk or water. These distinctive breaded puddings originated in Northern England and can be served in numerous ways depending on the choice of ingredients.
But one way that Yorkshire pudding has historically NEVER been served is as an additive to a beer…that is until now.
Northern Monk Yorkshire Pudding Beer
Leeds, England-based Northern Monk has partnered with Aunt Bessie’s, a UK food producer renowned for its Yorkshire pudding products, to produce two new beers brewed with foods more commonly associated with a Sunday meal than with something served in a glass…
Northern Monk Sunday Roast is a 5.7% ABV Brown Ale brewed with Aunt Bessie’s trademark Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes, which were added during the mashing process.
Northern Monk Jam Roly Poly is interestingly described as a ‘jam and custard’ Pale Ale brewed using the ingredients in Aunt Bessie’s frozen puddings, including plum, apricot and strawberry.
Commenting on the unlikely collaboration, Northern Monk founder Russell Bisset refused to apologize…
“It’s been an honor working with Aunt Bessie’s, a truly iconic Northern brand. There’s nothing quite like a Sunday Roast with all the trimmings. We’ve worked together to create something that’s never been done before, and we hope that it brings some well-needed positivity to the nation.”
Whether a Yorkshire pudding is what a world besieged by a global pandemic needs now remains to be seen, but Sam Dolan, head of marketing at Aunt Bessie’s, was predictably upbeat about the collaboration…
‘There’s nothing like coming together with loved ones over a roast dinner and a cold beer, and so to join forces with a fellow Northern brand to create something which has never been done before is really special.
Bottom Line
American Craft Beer has long taken the position that just because a beer pairs well with a food, doesn’t mean that it needs to be in your beer. Otherwise we’d be seeing more pizza beers wouldn’t we?
Although considerably less offensive than beer brewed with farm-fresh crickets. in the pantheon of BAD IDEAS IN BREWING Yorkshire pudding is right up.
And given today’s tumultuous times we can only hope that things stop here for the sake of a civilization already under viral assault…
That idea not a bad enough for you?
