Hey, no one’s perfect…as we at American Craft Beer understand better than most. That said, there are some brewing ideas out there that are insanely misguided. So welcome to another BAD IDEAS IN BREWING…and we’re blaming an Australian brewing company for this one.
We’ve never been big on donut beers. Nor did we vouch for Strawberry Cream Puff Ale. We were part of the ‘resistance’ to IHOP Pancake Stout and will never support Oreo beer shakes either.
But in the world of brewing concepts, that nobody was asking for and nobody needs, beer-flavored tea is right up there.
Here’s The Deal
Unconcerned about its societal Impact, Australia’s Carlton & United Breweries has released a tea that’s crafted to taste like Victoria Bitter one of the company’s bestsellers “Down Under.”
The tea, which retails at AU$10 (£5.67) for a box of 24 pyramid teabags, is a blend of Ceylon black tea leaves and VB Super Pride Hop according to the Drinks Business.
Marketed as vegan, gluten-free and non-alcoholic, Carlton & United is adamant that Victoria Bitter Tea taste just like the beer.
But we have to ask if you’re looking for something brewed that tastes just like beer why not just go with a beer?
Do you know anyone that’s ever thought, “I’d have a cup of tea right now if only it tasted like beer?” We don’t. It could be an Australian thing… but still
Would your grandmother appreciate a cup of steaming hot tea that tastes like warm beer, only warmer? Ours wouldn’t…but maybe Australian grandmothers are different.
Bottom Line
Although beer and tea combinations do have some brewing history (especially on the craft side of things were many times anything goes) they are entirely different things.
You want your beer cold, maybe served in a mug…Who wants beer water served in a tea cup? Just sayin.’
