Top Beers in the US By State

The pandemic has caused a spike in alcohol sales, according to the recently published TOP Data Beer Report.

According to that survey sales have risen a healthy 8.9% since COVID-19 effectively shut down bars, taprooms and restaurants in much of the US. And the population transitioned to drinking at home.

One in four of survey respondents reported drinking 20 or more beers a month, while 22.1% claimed to have consumed between eight and 16 beers each month.

It will surprise few that Budweiser was ranked the most popular beer in 23 US states, including California and New York. And although Heineken ranked in the top five for 35 different states, it only nabbed the top spot in Ohio (!), closely followed by Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Light and Stella.

And Americans showed a pronounced preference for mass-market light beers such as Bud Light, Coors Light and Michelob Ultra.

Overall, Budweiser remained “king of beers” the US, ranking in the top five of all 48 mainland states surveyed. But a couple of true craft beer names including Dogfish Head in Delaware, Lazy Magnolia in Mississippi and Spotted Cow in Wisconsin did beat out the majors as the #1 beers in their states…

The complete list of the most popular beers by US state are:

  • Alabama – Budweiser
