The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – April 8, 2015

Yikes it’s April already. So much has happened and it doesn’t appear that things are going to be slowing down any time soon. But no worries – Rumor Mill is always on the case, keeping you plugged in to all the craft beer news that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you absolutely don’t want to miss that.

Styling (Boulder, CO) – Our friends at the Brewers Association just released the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines and they did a whole bunch of tweaking.Over 600 total changes were made to this year’s version, ranging from fine-tuning style parameters and category names, to the addition and deletion of certain beer style category guidelines, including:

  • Category Additions: Added Session India Pale Ale, Contemporary Gose, Chili Pepper Beer and Mixed Culture Brett Beer categories.
  • Category Revisions: Significantly revised German-Style Rye Ale, Fruit Wheat Beer, Belgian-Style Fruit Beer, Brett Beer and International-Style Pale Ale categories.
  • Category Deletions: Deleted Indigenous Beer category – (whatever that was).

National Beer Day A Bust (Washington, DC) – In yet more proof, that there will eventually be a national day commemorating just about everything – yesterday was National Beer Day. (It was also National No Housework Day and National Coffee Cake Day, but whatever). Yes it’s true, and you may have noticed that we didn’t “officially” celebrate it – and there was a reason we that we didn’t. The ACB Editorial staff remains adamant that every day is “Beer Day” and that adopting any other position is not only limiting, but extremely short-sighted.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – April 8, 2015New Belgium And Kim Jordan Get Philanthropic (Ft Collins, CO) – New Belgium Brewing and their CEO Kim Jordan collectively gifted $1 Million to build a new fermentation science program at Colorado State University. We’ve had a great relationship with the university over the years and it’s personally meaningful to me to be able to give something back,” said Jordan. “Craft brewing has afforded opportunity to more than 100,000 people working in our industry and it’s important to support the next generation of brewers who will take us into the future.”

New Belgium And Kim Jordan Give ACB Absolutely Nothing (Ft Collins, CO) – On top of recent news that New Belgium and their CEO Kim Jordan had made a $1 Million gift to Colorado State University, comes word that they won’t be giving American Craft Beer LLC a single dime. “What are we chopped liver?” queried a clearly disappointed, Tom Bobak, Editor at ACB, “it’s not like we’re not constantly hyping their beers.”

What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all the breweries who ship us beer from time to time. It’s always great to sample the brews that we write about and helps to give us have a better feel for what’s happening out there. Last night we hit up a new summer seasonal that we just received from Magic Hat. Stealin’ Time Summer Wheat is a 5.5% ABV American Wheat Ale brewed with ginger – and was released for time well spent.
