The American Craft Beer Super Bowl Weekend Picks

Hey it’s Friday and unless you’ve living under a rock (or drinking too much) you know that it’s Super Bowl weekend. But the game is not until Sunday night and you’ve got the rest of the weekend to play your own games. And that’s where we come in. From the nation’s coolest beer festivals to movies, music and cutting edge TV – we’ve got your back big-time.

Plus we’ve a special Super Bowl Beer Pick winner.

, The American Craft Beer Super Bowl Weekend PicksNFL Super Bowl 50 (Santa Clara, CA) Levi Stadium – 6:30 pm EST on CBS.  On the plus side, this year’s throwdown will feature the NFC’s 15-1 Carolina Panthers up against AFC champions, the Denver Broncos, so it should be a decent game. But when you advertise a game as taking place in the San Francisco Bay AREA – you’re admitting that Levi Stadium is miles away from any real urban center – and that Des Moines, Iowa might have been a more exciting Super Bowl location.

Super Bowl Music – This year’s half-time entertainment will be provided by one of the whitest bands ever, Coldplay – with special guest appearances by Beyoncé, and Bruno Mars (in what we see as a desperate attempt to give these aging Alt-rockers some ethnic cred). Lady Gaga will also be on hand to sing the national anthem – (And what could possibly go wrong there?)

Super Bowl Commercials – Part of the Super Bowl experience are the commercials – notably the Big Beer commercials – and we don’t expect that to change this year. Bud Light (the Official Beer of the NFL by the way) has already been hyping their Super Bowl commercial with Amy Schumer and Seth Rogen everywhere they can.

As we reported earlier Budweiser, who’ve advertised in every Super Bowl since its inception, has unfortunately dumped their cute little dog commercials in favor of something with actress Helen Mirren. Still we can’t help but appreciate this bit.

Shock Top will make its Super Bowl advertising debut in the “faux craft beer” category. And we can only hope that Anheuser-Busch avoids any embarrassing craft beer putdowns, like what they unfortunately chose to air last year.

On The Big Screen – Hollywood knows better than to open any movie that they believe in, on Super Bowl weekend. Sure they’ll debut the occasional “chick flick” like this week’s The Choice (which, be clear, we are not recommending). We suggest you avoid the local Cineplex altogether and stream a great football movie at home instead. Everyone has a favorite, but 2004’s Friday Night Lights is certainly one of the best.

Our Super Bowl Beer Pick

A Super Bowl beer is not anything dark or double. A Super Bowl beer isn’t anything with a crushingly high ABV. A Super Bowl beer is something you can drink all game long without slurring your words or forgetting what quarter you’re in. Our Super Bowl Beer Pick is Firestone Walker’sPivo Hoppy Pils – a classically rendered Pilsner that’s brewed for drinking many.
