The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – April 5, 2013

Hey it’s Friday. Spring’s right around the corner, and as far as we’re concerned, can’t come quick enough. It’s time for a break. You need some fun this weekend. And that’s where we come in! We’re all about it and we’ve got your back big-time. Plus we’ve got a special “Spring’s Coming” beer pick that we’re going to spring on you…So relax and welcome to this week’s edition of our awesome Weekend Picks!

Billed as a “Celebration of Suds,” the Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival is taking place this weekend and it sounds like one-stop shopping for the best in music, beer, and fun. This two-day, three session, “beerganza” is taking place tonight and tomorrow (April 5th – 6th) at the Atlantic City Convention Center and will feature beers from more than 80 breweries. For the 2013 festival, producers are bringing in musical headliners Reverend Horton Heat and Rusted Root and there’s talk of a top secret act showing up too, so you do not want to miss this! , The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – April 5, 2013One of this season’s most anticipated horror movies is opening this weekend and we’ve already bought our tickets. Evil Dead is a re-boot of Sam Raimi’s original classic – a film considered by many to be the scariest movie ever made. Big shoes to fill – we get it – and that’s part of why we’re so interested. You’d have to have been living under a rock to not be familiar with the basic story – five friends in a remote cabin discover a Book of the Dead -and in reading it, they unwittingly unleash a forest full of demons. The director, Fede Alvarez, is a relative newcomer who earned the director’s chair after his short Panic Attack went viral. We admire his bravado for taking on a horror classic and we’re thinking that even if he’s only half successful, we might still be terrified.

DrinkEatPlay will be presenting its fifth annual LA Beer Festival this weekend, so if you’re out LA way, you want to think about being there. It’s all taking place tomorrow (April 5th) at the Paramount Studios in Los Angeles (Yes!) and it’s going to be a gas. There will be afternoon and evening tasting sessions both featuring the finest of the region’s craft brewers and they’ll all be bringing their best. There will be live music and food trucks and even an after-party at Wirsthaus -because everybody needs an after-party after a day of drinking. Our Weekend Beer Pick

Port City Brewing Company is reintroducing last summer’s accidental beer Derecho Common, a beer that was the unlikely yet popular result ofa turbulent derecho storm that knocked out power at the brewery for five days in June 2012. At that time, Port City’s Head Brewer Jonathan Reeves was able to save a tank of fermenting lager beer by brewing it as a California Common, or steam beer, which ferments out at 65 degrees Fahrenheit rather than 40 degrees as with a typical lager. This year’s “Common” is a recreation of those techniques and will soon be available in six-packs and on draft.
