Where I come from, this holiday is lovingly referred to as Pink Beer Day. And although I fully support my college counterparts who celebrate by mixing pink dye into their bud light, this year I’ve got a better idea. These beers aren’t pink, but they’ll put you in the spirit–whatever spirit that may be.
If you’re staying in:
Picking a beer that a) you will like, b) your significant other will like, and c) still has enough flavor to merit celebrating with? That’s challenge enough to turn you to merlot. Don’t! These smooth porters are friendly and they go well with chocolate.
Cocoa Porter—Tommyknocker Brewery
Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout—Flying Dog Brewery
If you’re going out:
For many of us, Valentine’s Day is just another on the long list of reasons to party. So shrug off that Mardi Gras hangover and grab some friends and one of these festive, hoppy companions.
“Lips of Faith” La Folie—New Belgium Brewing
Brooklyn Blast Pale Ale—Brooklyn Brewery
If you’re riding solo:
If you’re like me last year, V-day consisted of getting my oil changed and doing my taxes. For those who don’t feel the Hallmark-induced enthusiasm, let some malt and hops keep you company. These beers have a personality of their own, and they’ll go perfectly with that pint of Ben & Jerry’s and an episode of The Bachelor. Take that, Cupid.
