The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – September 24, 2014

Hey it’s Wednesday and that means it’s Rumor Mill Time….The craft beer distribution map is changing so fast our heads are spinning. We’ll get into all those changes and on to other things that are breaking right now in the world of craft beer. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately.

We don’t sleep so you can….THIS WEEK’S RUMOR MILL IS ON!

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – September 24, 2014Breckenridge Tanking! (Littleton, CO) – Early last year, Breckenridge Brewery announced the plans for its new 85,000 sq. ft. $35 million brewery and farmhouse restaurant, located on a 12-acre country spread along the South Platte River in Littleton, and things are progressing. The last of sixteen towering fermentation tanks were recently put into place, as were four 400-barrel brite tanks.

Border Crossing (North America) – The Stone Brewing Company has announced that they’re taking their brand north of the border into Canada beginning Oct 20. The provinces of Alberta and British Columbia will join 40 US states, DC, and Puerto Rico on Stone’s distribution map.

Vote For The Best Beer Town (Anywhere, USA) – Hey we know these things can be kind of lame but we still fall for them anyway. In an attempt to move in on the turf once occupied by Charlie Papazian’s now-defunct Beer City USA poll, USA Today is now hosting its own survey and you can vote for your favorite beer city now through October 13. Contest rules allow one vote per person every 12 hours so be ready for the usual ballot-stuffing. And although they don’t publish real-time vote totals, the top 5 list is viewable after casting a vote so you can see who is currently leading.

Victory To Begin Canning in 2015 (Downingtown, PA) – In response to consumer demand and much online speculation, Victory Brewing is announcing plans to install a canning line in their new Parkesburg facility slated for 2015. Summer Love Ale is tentatively scheduled to be the Victory title to make its aluminum debut. Victory believes that offering strategic brands in a can format will help them keep up with growing fan demand and enable them to introduce their beer to a larger audience.

What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all of the American craft breweries who have shared their wares with us in the past and those of you who have shipped us beer from time to time. It’s great to be able to sample the brews that we write about and it helps us have a better feel for what’s happening out there. Last night, we uncorked the latest Game of Thrones beer that Brewery Ommegang and HBO were kind enough to send our way. Valar Morghulis is the fourth edition to the “way-cool” Game of Thrones series and also one of our favorites. It’s a rich 8% ABV Belgian-style Abbey Dubbel brewed with dark candi sugar that pours deep chestnut brown. We’ve been told Valar Morghulis will go on sale October 1st – and we expect fans will be lining up for this one.
