It’s Wednesday and its Rumor Mill Time! Hurricane Sandy has been wreaking havoc out East and there are massive outages everywhere. Its economic toll has yet to be quantified, but is expected to be enormous and the craft brewing community is not expected to escape it. We’ll be giving you everything that we know so far, plus on a lighter note, we’ve some “arty” craft beer news from our friends at Harmon Brewery and DC Brau……We also have some hot new releases that you’ll want to look out for, so fasten your seatbelt because ….IT IS ON!
Hurricane Sandy a Nightmare for Northeast Brewers (Washington DC) The wrath of Hurricane Sandy is being felt all throughout the North East corridor. There are massive outages from the mid-Atlantic into New England and its toll is expected to be massive. “There’s no way that the brewing community is going to escape Sandy’s impact….There will be economic consequences at the very least” said Tom Bobak, editor for AmericanCraftBeer.com. “Alexandria’s Port City Brewing took a hit due to power outages when Irene came through DC earlier this year. Things were down for days after it came through …and Irene was a joke compared to this bitch.”
Harmon Hop Gets Warholed (Tacoma, WA) – In 1982, Andy Warhol set his sights on Tacoma with a proposal to drape the Tacoma Dome with a Pop Art flower. Today, those flowers are coming to Tacoma Art Museum and have inspired the local Harmon Brewery to create Hop Art Ale, a special, seasonal IPA to celebrate Warhol’s Tacoma connections. The flower-inspired ale is the fourth seasonal beer that Harmon Brewery has crafted in partnership with Tacoma Art Museum.
Brooklyn Brewery Maxes Out (Brooklyn, NY) – This week, The Brooklyn Brewery installed eight new 200-barrel fermenters, one of the last pieces in a plan to max out capacity at the brewing facility in Williamsburg. Our friends at beerpulse.com have reported that the company is on pace to produce 180k barrels this year, up from 140k last year and should easily pass 200k next year so these fermenters are much needed.
DC Brau Goes Graffiti Art (Washington, DC) – On Friday, October 26th, DC Brau will kick off the first edition of its DC Artist Series with a run of labels designed by local graffiti artist Kelly Towles. The Artist series celebrates DC’s vibrant art scene by selecting one local artist each year to design original labels for each of brewery’s three flagship beers–the Public Pale Ale, Corruption IPA and Citizen Belgian-Style Ale. As a limited-release series, only 500 22oz bomber-style bottles of each beer will be available. The DC Artist Series will be distributed DC- and Virginia-wide beginning October 29th.

Sky Hag Hits the Runway (Kent, WA) – Airways Brewing Company® is celebrating the second anniversary of its flagship beer with the introduction of 22-ounce bottles of Sky Hag IPA. Sky Hag is a salute to a true American aviation icon, the Sky Hag, the battle-hardened, bitter women of the sky and will be available throughout the Seattle-Tacoma area beginning Friday, November 2
Libertine Time (Minneapolis, MN) – Fulton Beer’s just announced the release of their fall seasonal The Libertine for the first time ever. This release marks Fulton’s first foray into 750 mL bottles but they warn that The Libertine is an extremely limited release and will also be available on tap and in growlers at the brewery through November.
