The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – May 27, 2015

We can’t believe it’s June already…So much has happened this year and it doesn’t appear that things will be slowing down any time soon. But no worries – Rumor Mill is always on the case, keeping you plugged in to all the craft beer news that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you absolutely don’t want to miss that.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – May 27, 2015NEW BELGIUM LAUDED AND ACB DISSED AGAIN (Ft Collins, C0)-  WorldBlu, a company specializing in freedom-centered, democratic organizational design and leadership, has named New Belgium Brewing to its ninth annual WorldBlu List of Most Freedom-Centered Workplaces. The 2015 list certified 26 organizations around the world. To hardly no one’s surprise, American Craft Beer (ACB) once again did not make the prestigious list. “What are we…dog shit?” inquired ACB Founder Tom Bobak (who’s all over this week’s Rumor Mill). “You just don’t get much more self-centered than this organization.”

MORE AMAZING CRAFT BEER STATS (Everywhere, USA) – We’re almost entering uncharted waters with the growth of American craft breweries. Mainstreet.com puts the number of permitted breweries at around 3,400 and we expect that the actual total, as of today, is well north of that. And keep in mind that are some 2,000 more breweries in planning stages – so it doesn’t that this runaway train will be slowing down any time soon.

RETURN OF THE LAGER (Everywhere, USA) – Once shunned by the craft beer industry (and its fans) Lagers – a style of beer that uses bottom-fermenting yeast and is conditioned at colder temperatures – are becoming fashionable again. CNBC is reporting that “in January, Pilsner sales rose 56 percent versus a year ago.” We predict that this stat is no mere outlier and that the Lager’s resurgence will end up being one of the biggest craft beer stories of 2015.

CHURCH ATTENDENCE WORRIES LOOM WITH PASSAGE OF NEW GROWLER LAW (Montgomery, MN) – A handful of breweries celebrated a first over the holiday weekend – growlers sales of craft beer on a Sunday. Earlier in the month, Governor Mark Dayton signed into law a bill that allows craft breweries to sell 64oz growler pours on Sundays. KARE11 reports “the state law leaves it up to individual cities to decide” whether to sign into this law {or not} and that some cities jumped right in, in spite of liturgical concerns. “I like attending church on Sunday as much as the next guy,” said Tom Bobak, Editor at American Craft Beer “but many Minnesota patrons will be forced into making some very tough choices. “And these decisions are only going to get more difficult during football season,” Bobak added.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN DRINKING LATELY (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all the breweries who ship us beer from time to time. It’s always great to sample the brews that we write about and helps to give us a better feel for what’s happening out there. Last night we ended an evening of drinking with the newest release from Heavy Seas Uncharted Waters Series. Blackbeard’s Breakfast is a 10% ABV Barrel Aged Porter brewed with coffee it finished us off nicely.
