The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – March 4, 2015

February is over and it’s been a tumultuous start to the year. But no worries – Rumor Mill is on the case, making sure that you are always plugged in to all the craft beer news that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you absolutely don’t want to miss that.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – March 4, 2015Slacktavist (Munster, IN) – That’s the name of a special collaboration beer brewed up by Three Floyds and Sun King in support of their effort to change state law to let craft brewers brew more beer to sell in Indiana. “The Indiana House voted 87-7 last week to raise the amount craft breweries can brew for sale in Indiana to 90,000 barrels,” according to the nwitimes, and that bill has moved on to the Indiana State Senate.

Cloudburst Brainstorm (Seattle, WA)  The first brewer to break off from either 10 Barrel or Elysian Brewing following their recent acquisitions by AB-InBev is Steve Luke at Elysian. While he’s been planning to set out on his own for years, soon opening Cloudburst Brewing, we find it quite ironic that he was the brewer who conceived that Pumpkin Peach Ale that Budweiser crowed about in their Super Bowl ad. He also created a fantastic IPA in Space Dust and we look forward to trying his new brews soon!

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – March 4, 2015Opening Taps (Mills River, NC) – Sierra Nevada will be opening their new North Carolina-based restaurant and taproom next Tuesday, March 10th. The Citizen-Times is reporting that the taproom (which is located next to the brewery) “will feature almost two dozen Sierra Nevada beers including one-offs and specialties not available anywhere else.”

Not In Kansas Anymore? (Topeka, KS) – Two bills before the Kansas Legislature could greatly help the state’s craft beer industry. The Kansas City Business Journal is reporting that new legislation in the House “would allow breweries to sell their beer directly, a move brewers say would save them the cost of going through a distributor,” and that another pending bill “would increase the maximum brewers can produce from 30,000 to 60,000 barrels a year.”

What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all of the breweries who ship us beer from time to time. It’s always great to sample the brews that we write about and it helps give us a better feel for what’s happening out there. Last night, we hit up a special collaboration that we just received from Pennsylvania-based Thump Keg Brewing. Brewed using whisky maker George Dickel’s signature mash bill, Thump Keg Rye IPA is a 6.2% ABV Pale Ale that melds the flavors and tones of Tennessee rye whisky with the hop-forward instincts of a classic American IPA. Cheers!
