The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – June 17, 2015

We can’t believe we’re half way through June already…So much has happened this year and it doesn’t appear that things will be slowing down any time soon. But no worries – Rumor Mill is always on the case, keeping you plugged in to all the craft beer news that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you absolutely don’t want to miss that.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – June 17, 2015THE BREWERS ASSOCIATION GETS A NEW KOPP IN EUROPE (Boulder, CO) – To further American craft beer promotion and education in Europe, the BA has named a new ambassador – and Sylvia Kopp is a big get for the organization. One of Germany’s leading beer sommeliers, Kopp is co-founder and leader of Berlin Beer Academy, a school for trade professionals and consumers devoted to exploring the pleasures of beer. She is a jury member at international beer competitions including the World Beer Cup®, European Beer Star and Brussels Beer Challenge. In September 2014, her book Barley & Hops: The Craft Beer Book was released by Gestalten publishers in English and German.

NO BEER FOR YOU! (Boston, MA) – You can donate your time and your sweat equity to a charity in Massachusetts. You can donate food, a location and entertainment and even wine to your favorite cause. But you just can’t donate beer and spirits. According to Boston.com “it’s illegal to donate beer or spirits — but not wine, strangely — to a charitable organization, either for sale at auction, or for serving at fundraising events.” Go figure…

OKTOBERFEST GETS PRICIER (Munich. Germany) – It appears that escalating beer prices aren’t limited to the states and economists predict the price of a liter of beer at this year’s Oktoberfest will be rising yet again. Oktoberfest originated as a celebration that marked the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, (but you probably knew that). According to the Deutsche Welle, “20 years ago, a liter of beer cost half of what it does today.”

THAT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE GATORADE That Doesn’t Look Like Gatorade (Atlanta, GA) – During an appearance on Sunday’s Garbage Time with Katie Nolan, Atlanta Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski admitted to drinking beer during some ball games. According to the Bleacher Report, the 18-year vet also came clean on all the times he’s played professionally with a hangover – so we’re thinking this might be a “hair of the dog” play on his part.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN DRINKING LATELY (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all the breweries who ship us beer from time to time. It’s always great to sample the brews that we write about and helps to give us a better feel for what’s happening out there. Last night we ended our day celebrating with something we just received from Left Hand Brewing. Last night we hit up Left Hand’s new Introvert Session IPA – a 4.8% ABV hop-forward India Pale Ale that’s drinks like a big IPA but doesn’t crush you…nice!
