The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – July 24, 2013

Hey it’s Wednesday and it’s Rumor Mill Time…A power player from Washington visits Heavy Seas. We’ll be bringing you what we know so far. Plus we’ve got some fast-breaking news from our friends at Stone and an update from Sam Calagione’s compound. We’ve also got an awesome new release that you’ll want to chase down. So fasten your seat belts everybody…THIS WEEK’S RUMOR MILL IS ON!

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – July 24, 2013Beer Makes You Delicious (Everywhere, USA) – We’ve written about “beer goggles” in the past, but now Smithsonian.com is reporting that “just a single 12 oz. bottle of beer can make you more attractive to the insects.” Although “researchers had suspected this was because drinking increases the amount of ethanol excreted in sweat, or because it increases body temperature, neither of these factors were found to correlate with mosquito landings.” So we’re thinking that they’re just drawn to drinking beer…We know we are!

Senator Talks Taxes at Heavy Seas (Baltimore, MD) – Maryland Senator Ben Cardin paid a visit to Heavy Seas last Friday and it wasn’t just to sample their beer. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that he also wanted to discuss the Small BREW (Brewer Reinvestment and Expanding Workforce) Act that if passed “would cut rates on excise taxes for small craft breweries throughout the country in half.”

This Kind of Thing Needs To Stop! (Murcia, Spain) – By now, many of you have heard about the beer-chugging contest winner who died after having downed 6 liters of beer in twenty minutes. In spite of this unfortunate tragedy, the town’s mayor allegedly defended the tradition and indicated that they’ve no plans to cancel it going forward. So yes…we’re pissed. We get that these kinds of stupid and self-abusing drinking games may have been going on forever – but that doesn’t mean we should accept or endorse them – and we don’t. Alcohol is a drug and its abuse can have deadly consequences. And we’ve no stomach for public spectacles like the one that just took place in Murcia.

Beltway Brewing Contracts! (Sterling, VA) – The newest addition to DC’s brewing scene won’t be known for their own beer, but someone else’s. That’s because the soon-to-open Beltway Brewing is getting into the contract brewing business, and according to the Washington Business Journal, “will be devoted almost entirely to brewing someone else’s beer.”

Dogfish Head Launches New Brewhouse (Milton, DE) – Dogfish Head posted on Instagram announcing that they’ve activated their 200-barrel brewhouse last week. As we’ve written about before, this addition will eventually allow them a production capability of 500,000 barrels of beer a year.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – July 24, 2013Nebraska Gets Stone (Escondido, CA) – As our newest Nebraska-based correspondent Sara Simonsen will attest, the craft beer scene in the Cornhusker State is growing by leaps and bounds. And it seems that the industry’s bigger players have taken notice. Stone Brewing announced yesterday that, beginning August 20, the San Diego, CA brewing company’s beers will be available in bars, restaurants, and retail outlets in Nebraska for the first time. Stone will distribute its beers throughout the state via four area distributors: Double Eagle Beverage, Eagle Beverage, H & H Distributing, and Quality Brands of Omaha.
