The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – January 20, 2016

2016 is ON… and clearly nothing is slowing down anytime soon. But no worries, Rumor Mill is always on the case, keeping you plugged in to all the craft beer news that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you absolutely don’t want to miss that.

Too Many, Too Soon, Too Sad (USA) – If you care about music (as so many of us in the craft beer industry do) it’s been a sobering time. The passing of David Bowie last week was tough, and last night we learned that Glen Frey of the Eagles had died. This on top of a terrible month of losses that also includes the great Natalie Cole, Motörhead’s Lemmy Kkilmster, Scott Weiland and Mic Gillette from Tower of Power. We’ll be raising a glass and remembering all these great artists – and sadly, they’ll all be missed.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – January 20, 2016Schlafly To Expand Bottleworks (St Louis, MO) – Schlafly Beer has announced that they will be expanding Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood this year. Plans include the modernization of their existing bottling line and the addition of more fermentation tanks. This seven-figure upgrade reaffirms the brewery’s commitment to the Maplewood community and will allows them a capacity of nearly 90,000 barrels by 2017 – almost double their current production.

Words To Drink By (New York, NY) – “People don’t run out of dreams — people just run out of time.”

– Glen Frey (1948 -2016) – Lyrics from River of Dreams

Jester King Gets Even Cooler (Austin, TX) – Jester King, one of America’s leaders in spontaneous fermentation, has upped their ability “to capture airborne yeast and bacteria overnight,” by adding a new coolship. Permanently situated in an upstairs corner of their barrel room, this new copper basin holds about 950 gallons of wort and is designed to allow the cold night air to inoculate wort with native yeast and bacteria from their own backyard. Geeky cool!

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – January 20, 2016Oskar Blues Charts Epic Growth (Longmont, CO / Brevard, NC) – Fueled by its Eastern and Western brewing facilities, Oskar Blues has announced a record 30% growth in year-over-year sales. The brewery has expanded their distribution to include 45 U.S. states, parts of Canada, Sweden, and the UK – and they plan to reach all 50 states by mid-year 2016.

What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Portland, ME) – We’d like to thank all the breweries who ship us beer from time to time. It’s always great to sample the brews that we write about and helps to give us a better feel for what’s happening out there. Last night we hit up a bomber of something special from our friends atAirways Brewing. Sky Hag IPA is a 7.8% ABV bitterfest – a celebration of Columbus hops and the brewery’s most popular beer.
