The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – April 22, 2015

Yikes April is flying by… So much has happened already this year and it doesn’t appear that things are going to be slowing down any time soon. But no worries – Rumor Mill is always on the case, keeping you plugged in to all the craft beer news that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you absolutely don’t want to miss that.

This Beer Tastes Like Shit! (Salem, OR) – We’ve all thought it – and most of us have said as much on occasion – and now we can only hope that a new environmental state initiative can help brewers successfully turn waste water into beer. The Daily News is reporting that “an Oregon government environmental panel has approved a plan for local brewers to use recycled sewage water — a source of H2O that the group says will be increasingly necessary due to climate change.”

Politically Correct Mobocracy Jumps Ugly with Ben & Jerry (USA) – Even though a portion of its proceeds will be donated to Protect Our Winters, a nonprofit that advocates against climate change, Ben & Jerry’s new collaboration with New Belgium (Salted Caramel Brownie Brown Ale) is a problem for some.Uproxx is reporting that Bruce Lee Livingston, CEO of industry watchdog Alcohol Justice, has told USA Today that the new beer is “a troubling development” and “does no favors for the youth of America.”

Beer’s A New Cash Crop for Maryland Farmers (Annapolis, MD) – Thanks to the passage of Maryland Senate Bill 579 that allows the state’s famers “to start commercial brewing operations by obtaining a Class 8 farm brewery manufacturer’s license for an annual fee of $200,” beer brewed at the farm can “be sampled and sold onsite and at certain beer festivals and farmers markets,” according to Fortune. The only catch is that the beer’s ingredients(hops, wheat, barley, fruit, or other components) – must be grown on the farm.

More Craft Beer Crime! (Maple Grove, MN) – Talk about having a cow! New Glarus Spotted Cow Beer, a beloved Wisconsin staple, has been caught up in a “craft beer crime” across the border in Minnesota. Gawker is reporting that “State alcohol enforcers ran a sting operation on the Maple Tavern in Maple Grove, Minn. last week after an anonymous rat informed them the bar had Spotted Cow on tap and had been boasting about it on Facebook.”

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – April 22, 2015What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all the breweries who ship us beer from time to time. It’s always great to sample the brews that we write about and it helps to give us a better feel for what’s happening out there. Last night, we hit up a new summer seasonal that we recently received from Shmaltz Brewing. Clocking in at an agreeable 5.3% ABV, Shmaltz Slingshot is a hop-forward American Craft Lager that’s brewed with warming temperatures in mind.
