The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – April 16, 2014

Hey it’s Wednesday and that means it’s Rumor Mill Time. And even though we’re still rehabbing from last week’s CBC in Denver – we know you don’t care – so we’re on it.

So fasten your seat belts everybody because in spite of how we feel….THIS WEEK’S RUMOR MILL IS ON!

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – April 16, 2014Back in the High Life Again (Milwaukee, WI) – In a move that we can only see as going after Pabst’s Boho market, Miller High Life is introducing a new campaign aimed at today’s millennial beer drinker. The ‘I Am Rich’ campaign will appear on television and in various print publications including Rolling Stone and Vice Magazine. There will also be digital and social media initiatives.Miller High Life hopes to extend conversations socially with the re-launch of its @MillerHighLife Twitter handle and connect with drinkers via Facebook…..What, no Myspace campaign?

Everybody Wants to Get Stoned (Boulder, CO) – Kettle & Stone Brewing Company, a 10-month-old brewery based in Boulder, Colorado, will be changing its name after the Escondido, California-based Stone Brewing Company “gave it a difficult choice: change the name or agree not to expand,” according to the Daily Camera.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – April 16, 2014Friends in High Places (Denver, CO) – It’s great to know when your efforts are acknowledged and awarded, and American Craft Beer couldn’t be happier for all of this year’s World Beer Cup winners. But it’s also cool when you’re right next to the winner when they learn that they’ve just won, as we were last Friday when Starr Hill’s Mark Thompson learned that his beer Whiter Shade of Pale Ale had just taken a gold medal in the American-Belgo Style category.

Friends in High Places II (Kent, WA) – It was equally fun to be at the World Beer Cup ceremony and see our friends (and co-collaborators) Alex and Dione Dittmar at Washington State’s Airways Brewing Company take a silver medal for their 3rd Anniversary Ale in the Belgian-Style Dark category.

Buy American (Denver, CO) – Adam Nason just published a statistical breakout by countries of 2014’s World Beer Cup participants and winners and found that 70% of all the beers entered (3,402 to be exact) came from the good old USA. We also took a healthy 205 medals in this year’s competition.

Beer Style Trends (Denver, CO) – For the longest time, the American IPA has dominated American beer competitions and it was no different at this year’s World Beer Cup. The three most-entered style categories were the American-Style India Pale Ale with 223 entries, the American-Style Pale Ale with 121 entries, and the Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer with 111 entries submitted.
