The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – June 1, 2015

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – June 1, 2015Firestone Walker International Beer Festival – (Paso Robles, CA) Once again the cream of the craft brewing crop, along with finest of the craft beer media (including our own CEO/Editor Tom Bobak) gathered for yet another sold out Saturday of delicious libations and delectable food from all over the world, all in little ol’ Paso Robles. We don’t know all the details yet, but we’ll be sure to fill you in as soon as Tom stops holding out on us about this weekend’s gossip!

Michigan Booms – Last week the Brewer’s Association updated their State-By-State data on craft beer production throughout the country and Michigan blew us away with an increase in production of 41.5% in 2014 over the previous year! As reported in MiBiz,”the 159 craft brewers in Michigan produced 825,103 barrels of beer, up from 582,909 in 2013.” There must be something in the water in The Great Lake State…

Just for the Hefe-of-it – (Portland, OR) We were lucky enough to attend the kick-off event for Widmer’s second annual 100 Days of Hefe last Thursday and we’re pretty sure it’s going to something you won’t want to miss. Widmer Brother’s Brewing is holding 100 events, each at a different location, every night from May 28th through September 4th, all over the Portland area. At each event they’ll be raffling off a yellow and black city cruiser bike to promote cycling in the city via donations to Bicycle Transportation Alliance.

“We loved the 100 Days of Hefe program last year,” said Rob Widmer, co-founder of Widmer Brothers Brewing. “We wanted to do it again this year with the twist to donate to the BTA, which is a cause we love. I personally bike to work almost every day, and really admire the work the BTA does to encourage cycling in the City of Portland. We think this is a great way to promote Hefe, the BTA, and cycling in Portland.” You can find more about Widmer’s 100 Days of Hefe on their blog.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – June 1, 2015Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! (Melbourne, Australia) We kinda missed some news last weekend because of the long Memorial Day Weekend, but we thought you should know that the 2015 Australian International Beer Awards happened in Melbourne on the May 21st. And this was yet another banner year for the event with 1,700 submissions from 344 exhibitors, representing 35 countries. Having won 8 medals in total, including 5 Silver, Pelican Brewing of Pacific City, Oregon walked away with Champion Medium International Brewery. Cheers!

Beer Week Alert! – As part of our ongoing effort to help you plan where you need to be drinking each and every week, Quick Hits runs regular “Beer Week Alerts” and there are several that just started.  This week we’ve got two big city beer weeks that’ve already kicked off with Philly Beer Week and Vancouver Craft Beer Week (BC, Canada) both starting last weekend and continuing on through Sunday the 7th. So you know what to do…
