The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – July 28, 2014

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates -things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – July 28, 2014Just A Stone’s Throw Away? (Norfolk, VA) – As we’ve reported earlier, Norfolk is said to be on Stone Brewing Co.’s short list to possibly be home to the company’s new Eastern facility. And now The Virginian-Pilot is reporting that the “city has rezoned property on Northampton Boulevard to attract a brewery, brewpub, or microbrewery. Hmmmmmm…Additionally WCPO is reporting that we might be getting word on Stone’s final decision in the next 30-90 days.

Beer Wins! (Everywhere, USA) – It’s official – at least according to a recent Gallup Poll chronicling consumer consumption habits it is. Beer is now America’s favorite adult beverage. Beer came in with a 41% popularity ranking while 31% chose wine as their favorite and 23% chose liquor.

Greg Koch Pivots on Indiegogo Campaign (Escondido, CA) – Stone Brewing’s announced Indiegogo campaign pissed off a lot of people (It didn’t bother us all that much – but clearly we have no scruples.) And Koch responded to the growing criticism in a statement he left at The Bro’s and here’s some of what he wrote:

“I heard the feedback and we reconsidered, well, pretty much everything…I thought this whole thing would be a fun way to engage folks in a new chapter of our adventure, but I see that it seemed like it was panhandling for money.”

JB on the Bus (Everywhere, USA) – Noted author and ACB fav, Joshua Bernstein is currently travelling the country on the Beer Camp Across America tour bus and he’s chronicling all the stops along the way for Men’s Journal. JB’s a wonderful writer and he knows his beer – and even though we’re pissed that he’s having all the fun – we want you to check out his excellent series anyway.

David – 1 / Goliath – 0 (Sydney, Australia) – Oz-based Wayward Brewing Company has “won a two-year trademark battle against a subsidiary of multinational beer giant SABMiller,” according to Good Food. The case was brought against the small craft brewery “by SABMiller India, which argued the Wayward name was too similar to its Indian-made labels Haywards 5000 and Haywards 2000.” As a result of the court’s decision, the brewery is allowed to “register the Wayward name and SABMiller India has been ordered to pay costs…”
