The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – July 20, 2015

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – July 20, 2015So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

ACB On The Town For A Good Cause (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank the Belgium Ambassador Verbeke, together with Julie LaGuardia of Water.org, Neal Katcef of Capital Eagle – for inviting us to attend their reception held at the Ambassador’s Residence, to learn more about Stella Artois’ important “Buy a Lady a Drink” campaign.  Here’s the deal…

Today some 750 million people around the world don’t have access to clean water – a crisis that disproportionately affects women who walk a combined 200 million hours a day to collect water for their families. In support of Water.org and its co-founders Matt Damon and Gary White, Stella Artois has developed campaign to help provide women around the world access to clean water in their regions.

Stella Artois made a donation of $1.2 million USD to Water.org in January and you can make your own donation by purchasing a beautiful etched Stella Artois Chalices here.

Where is Craft Beer Growing The Most? (USA) – Nielsen just released an interesting new study that highlighted the new breakout markets for craft beer at retail. The study looked at both dollar and volume rankings – and the volume increases in alone where mind-blowing. The city that showed the biggest increase by volume was Birmingham, Alabama which grew an amazing 63.1%, followed by Cincinnati (27.5%), Cleveland (23.5%), San Diego (22.5%), and Des Moines (20.2%).

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – July 20, 2015David Walker on Last Week’s Firestone Walker Duvel Moortgat Deal (Paso Robles. CA) – Leave it to The New School (a wonderful site by the way) to track David Walker down and get his take on what led Firestone Walker in to this new alignment – and what he thinks it will mean for the brewery going forward.

Why Is Budweiser Still Taking Shots At Craft Beer? (St. Louis, MO) – A company doesn’t get as huge and successful as Budweiser by being stupid – but one has to question their continuing campaign mocking craft beer as a smart strategy. On top of this year’s unfortunate super commercial, this not so subtle attack on craft beer continued with a Bud & Burger spot in April and was capped off recently with a tweet from Budweiser reading “Nobody cheers for the guy who brings a watermelon wheat beer.” Question – If you hate craft beer so much why did you spend all that money adding Goose Island, 10 Barrel and Elysian to your holdings? What’s the next move – purchase 21st Amendment?
