The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – July 14, 2014

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates -things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

Cigar City Joins Traveling Carnival (Tampa, FL) – According to a report that first surfaced in TBO.com, Cigar City Brewing will be “taking its craft beers to a new level — sea level, that is, signing an exclusive agreement to serve its specialty brews on the 13 Florida-based Carnival Cruise Lines ships.”

Harpoon to become Employee-Owned (Boston, MA) – The Harpoon Brewery has announced that it will make the transition to an employee-owned company effective August 1 – a move designed to “ensure the brewery’s independence and preserve Harpoon’s culture.” The brewery was founded in 1986 on the Boston waterfront by Dan Kenary and Rich Doyle and has gone on to become the12th largest craft brewing operation in the country.Doyle will step down as CEO but will maintain part-time status at the brewery, focusing on key marketing and sales initiatives as well as new business development. Kenary will assume the role of CEO.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – July 14, 2014Two Bad Ideas in Brewing (Portland, OR) – There are a couple of really bad ideas coming out of this report we received via the Courthouse News Service. Bad Idea #1Sessions Law, an Atlanta-based firm that handles DUIs and vehicular homicide cases, has been advertising their services on single container to-go brown paper bags used at area convenience stores. Bad Idea #2 – The logo the law firm used is disturbingly similar to the logo that Full Sail Brewing uses with their Session Lager. See you in court, gentleman.

Well What Else Is There to Do Up There? (Fargo, ND) – For the second year in a row, North Dakota has taken the title as the “No. 1 state in the union for per capita beer consumption” according to a recently released study from the brainiacs at Beer Marketer’s Insights. “Taking two wins in a row is no easy feat,” remarked Tom Bobak, Editor-In-Chief at AmericanCraftBeer.com. “These people must start drinking at breakfast to do that kind of volume,” Bobak added, “but what else is there to do up there?”

ACB Beer Week Alert (Anywhere, USA) – In our ongoing effort to help you plan where you need to be in July, we’ve instituted regular beer week alerts that you need to pay attention to. One of our favorites, Ohio’s 9th Annual Beer Week, began last Friday and is running through July 19. And those party animals over by San Jose will be hosting their own week of serious craft beer at the end of the month when the Silicon Valley Beer Week kicks off on July 25.
