The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – January 12, 2015

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – January 12, 2015Ninkasi’s Jamie Floyd Takes On 2014 (Eugene, OR) – Jamie Floyd, the Co-Founder of one of our favorite breweries Ninkasi, wrote a retrospect on The Year in Beer that was published last week at The New School (another favorite of ours). We found it fascinating and you should check it out! And while you’re at it, you might also want to visit American Craft Beer Looks Back At 2014 – Part II & Part III for our take on “the year that was.”

Neither Imported Nor Brewed in Japan (Chicago, IL) – Beer drinkers who mistook the words “imported” and thought that the words “Japan’s prime brew” on the Kirin Ichiban label meant that the beer was a actually imported from Japan may now be entitled to receive a refund of up to $50. ABC7 is reporting that Anheuser-Busch settled a class action lawsuit last week, “after two Miami residents accused the company of deceiving consumers into thinking that Kirin beer is still imported from Japan, when it actually has been brewed by the company in the United States since 1996.”

Crocodile Bile Poisons Beer & Kills 52 Africans (Mozambique) – In a story as strange as it is tragic, AP is reporting that a beer contaminated with crocodile bile killed 52 people and sent 146 more to local hospitals in the Southern African country. And it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that the “woman who brewed the beer is also among the dead.”

More Craft Beer Crime (Thibodaux, LA) – In yet another sign of societal collapse, Louisiana resident Shelby Landry was arrested for stealing a case of beer from a local convenience store. WDSU6 is reporting that authorities were able to connect Landry to the incident by using surveillance images that revealed a partial license plate (wow! Just like in 24), and eventually led them to the alleged “beer criminal.”

Beer Week Alert! (Everywhere, USA) – As part of our ongoing effort to help you plan where you need to be drinking each and every week, Quick Hits will be featuring regular “Beer Week Alerts.” Over the weekend, two major celebrations kicked off – and they’re both big ones. Kalamazoo Beer Week runs through the Jan. 17 and Alaska Beer Week extends through Jan. 19.

Everything Pointing To Wisconsin (Stevens Point, WI) – The Stevens Point Brewery grew substantially last year and they’ve plans to get even bigger (and better) in 2015. The brewery has announced that they’ll be investing 1.5 million in upgrades and renovations this year. Improvements will include new canning gear, quality control equipment, and a 300-barrel bright beer tank used for conditioning beer.
