The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 9, 2015

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 9, 2015Pat Slattery and the Do Can Spirit (Lowell, MA) – It’s with great sadness that we share that the craft beer industry lost one of its own over the weekend. Pat Slattery was the founder of Massachusetts-based Do Can Brewery and we received word that he died in an accident on Friday. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Pat was a great friend to us and he will be missed. We’ll pass along memorial updates as we get them and are republishing our last article with him this morning.

Budweiser Ad Creates a Furor That Will Not Go Away (St. Louis, Mo) – We predicted last week that Anheuser-Busch would grow to regret the anti-craft beer commercial that they aired during last Sunday’s Super Bowl. And their desperate week of spinning speaks volumes as to just how deeply they now understand the degree of their fuck-up. The backlash from the craft beer community has been enormously entertaining however  and led to some great craft beer writing and hilarious video parodies.

Avery Almost Ready To Launch (Boulder, CA) – Avery Brewing’s move to their spectacular new digs is just one week away. The new 67,000-square-foot, two-story facility will be part of their 5.59 acre campus that will also feature four, gigantic, 720-barrel fermentation tanks, extensive laboratory space, and both a sit-down restaurant and a casual taproom. The Daily Camera is reporting that Avery invested $30 million for this custom-designed “state-of-the-art” upgrade and we can’t wait to visit.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 9, 2015Beer Week Alert! (Miami, FL) – As part of our ongoing effort to help you plan where you need to be drinking each and every week, Quick Hits runs regular “Beer Week Alerts” and one of our favorites, Arizona Beer Week, kicks off this Thursday and continues through the 21st. Then there’s Omaha Beer Week which runs Feb 13th through 20th, and Cincinnati Beer Week which also begins on the 13th and wraps up on the 22nd.

Swamped (Gainesville, FL) – Swamp Head Brewery has moved into their new facility, which will allow them 3X’s the production capability (up from 6,000 barrels of beer a year to 18,000 barrels), triple the tasting room capacity, and (most importantly) six times the restroom stalls. The Daily Commercial is reporting that as part of this expansion, “Swamp Head will add six employees for a total of 20, with hopes of creating more than 20 new jobs” in the near future.
