The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 23, 2015

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 23, 2015Hand Crafted Tasting Comes to Silicon Valley (Washington, DC) – We’ve attended events up in NYC as well as in DC that were produced by the Hand Crafted Tasting Company – and we’ve got to admit that these guys are good at what they do! And this coming Saturday, February 28th, they’re taking their game to the Silicon Valley when they host the San Jose Craft Beer Festival. The Expo Hall at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds will be ground zero for this two-session beerganza and it promises to be memorable. This special Spring Seasonal tasting will feature 75 of this nation’s most impressive and cutting-edge breweries and from what we’ve heard, they’ll be bringing in some impressive offerings and rarities. Bottom line – these guys know how to throw a serious craft beer event – so you might want to check it out.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 23, 2015Fighting Words (Milton, DE) – Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione is one of craft beer’s great spokespersons and his take on the biz is always interesting as well as on target. He’s also a gentleman, not prone to talking his competitors down – but he recently took his gloves off when he addressed AB InBev’s craft beer acquisition spree in Men’s Journal. It was a command performance on his part and is essential reading for anyone who cares about our industry’s future.

More Industry Leaders On Craft Beer Selling Out (Denver, CO)  Budweiser’s recent acquisitions of prestigious craft breweries like 10 Barrel and Elysian Brewing has sent shockwaves throughout our industry. Shock has given way to a sobering new reality that our most trusted and beloved craft breweries could potentially cede to acquisition in the future. New Belgium’s Kim Jordan, along with fellow Colorado-based brewers, reflected on craft beer’s darkening skies and staving off acquisition in the Denver Post yesterday. It too was a fascinating read.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 23, 2015Beer Week Alert! (Miami, FL) – As part of our ongoing effort to help you plan where you need to be drinking each and every week, Quick Hits runs regular “Beer Week Alerts” and one of our favorites, New York Craft Beer Week, kicked things off last Friday in the “Big Apple” and rages though March 1st. The Portsmouth Beer Week also started over the weekend up in New Hampshire and it will continue through March 2nd.
