The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 2, 2015

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

From Call Girl To Brewer (United Kingdom) – We got your attention didn’t we? The Mirror is reporting that Dr. Brooke Magnanti, who wrote the sexually explicit novel Secret Diary of a Call Girl and worked as a prostitute in London under the pen-name Belle de Jour, has taken the obvious next step in her career. She’s left the streets of London and moved to a remote home in Glencoe, Scotland, and is learning to become a brewer. We can only hope that she finds her second profession as interesting as we found her first.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 2, 2015American Brewery Plans New Operation in Germany (St. Louis, MO) – It appears that Stone won’t be the only American brewer to soon be opening a new branch in Germany. Urban Chestnut Brewing Company has acquired Bürgerbräu Wolnzach, a brewery in Wolnzach, Germany, which is about 35 miles north of Munich. The Bend Bulletin is reporting that “the St. Louis-based company plans to brew small batches of beer at the Bavarian facility in the second quarter of 2015.”

We Keep Forgetting To Tell You (Lanzhou University)  A new study published in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry has found that xanthohumol, a compound commonly found in hops, might actually have antioxidant qualities that could help protect brain cells from the kind of damage that eventually leads to neurological disorders like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. We’ve been meaning to tell you about this study for weeks now  but for some reason it kept slipping our minds.

More Craft Beer Crime (Prosser, WA) – Washington State resident, Norverto Escovedo, has been charged with second-degree burglary and unlawful possession of a firearm and third-degree theft and malicious mischief for stealing beer and chips (you’ve got to have chips!) from a regional convenience store on Christmas Eve. According to the Tri-City Herald, he was also looking to steal a cellphone but we expect that the beer was his priority.

Beer Week Alert! (Miami, FL) – As part of our ongoing effort to help you plan where you need to be drinking each and every week, Quick Hits runs regular “Beer Week Alerts” and one of our favorites is just around the corner. San Francisco Beer Week kicks off February 6th and continues through the 15th. This is one of the good ones so don’t miss it!
