The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 17, 2015

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 17, 2015Keep An Open Mind (Boulder, CO) – Avery Brewing is opening their spectacular, new $30 million brewing facility today and we’re excited for them. The new 67,000-square-foot, two-story facility will be part of their 5.59 acre campus that will also feature four, gigantic, 720-barrel fermentation tanks, extensive laboratory space, and both a sit-down restaurant and a casual taproom. We can’t wait to visit!

The Art Of Branding Craft Beer (Seattle, WA)  We view the craft beer biz as an entertainment industry – a wonderful mashup of brewing, performance, and visual arts. And yes, it all starts with the beer, but it sure doesn’t end there. A brewery’s branding is increasingly important in today’s crowded marketplace and its label art and imaging now matter more than ever. That’s why we chased down Oceania Eagan, the Founder and Creative Director of Blindtiger Design. She’s doing some exciting things in the world of craft beer branding, and we’ll be bringing you our interview with her this Wednesday.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 17, 2015Gorgeous (Hood River, OR) – Columbia Gorge is a strikingly beautiful expanse in the Pacific Northwest. It straddles the powerful Hood River, a scenic masterpiece as well as a wind-surfing and outdoor sports mecca. It’s also home to some incredible craft breweries and the area has just launched a new alliance to represent them. Breweries In the Gorge (BIG), unites 10 breweries large and small from both sides of the Columbia River Gorge region in Washington and Oregon, and you can learn more about them here.

Zwickelmania Redux (Oregon) – We wrote about Zwickelmania in last Friday’s Weekend Picks. It’s this amazing one-day event where breweries all over the state opened their doors to their fans for free tours and samples. Our Assistant Editor, Warren Wills, was all over this event and his commitment to sampling as many beers as possible was as admirable as it was concerning. He’ll be bringing you all of his highlights (at least those that he can remember) tomorrow – so you don’t want to miss that.

Beer Week Alert! (Miami, FL) – As part of our ongoing effort to help you plan where you need to be drinking each and every week, Quick Hits runs regular “Beer Week Alerts.” One of our favorites, Arizona Beer Week, kicked off last Thursday and continues through February 21st. Omaha Beer Week is up and running and it goes through the 20th, and Cincinnati Beer Week is also “kicking it” and wraps up on the 22nd. And get ready for New York Craft Beer Week, which begins in the “Big Apple” this coming Friday, the 20th, and rages through March 1st.
