The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 1, 2016

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourself.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 1, 2016ACB on the Town (New York, NY) ACB was recently invited to attend the NYC Brewers Guild Press Preview Happy Hour down at the Flatiron Hall in Manhattan. The event was held to promote the 8th Annual NYC Beer Week (February 19-28th) – and as usual we had way too much fun!

It was great to see the Brewers Guild President and KelSo Beer’s Kelly Taylor speak passionately about the upcoming events and collaborations throughout the city. And we can’t to taste the SMASH beers, which are made solely using NY state malt and hops. It was also a perfect opportunity to catch up with friends and fellow beer writers from other fantastic publications. The beers being served at the event were great as well – and some highlights included the bottle conditioned Golden Ale by Transmitter Brewing, Defender IPA by Brooklyn Brewery and C.R.E.A.M., a blonde coffee ale by Sixpoint Brewery. We personally can’t wait for the NYC Beer Week Opening Bash Cruise on Feb. 20th, and hope to see you all there!

Words To Drink By (Petaluma, CA) – “Beer Speaks. People Mumble.”

Is Lagunitas Looking To Open Something In Portland? (Petaluma, CA) – As our friends at The New School detailed last week, Lagunitas Brewing’s Tony Magee tweeted out a Southwest Portland location that will be home to some new Lagunitas-related venture. Magee wasn’t all that forthcoming as to what it’s going to be exactly (brewpub…music outlet, think tank, who the hell knows) – but he does expect “whatever it is” to be open by Portland Beer Week.

German Beer Consumption Hits New Low (Berlin) – In the shadow of the 500th anniversary of Germany’s famous beer purity law comes word that that country’s beer , The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – February 1, 2016consumption is now the lowest in a quarter century. No comment from Stone’s Greg Koch.

Empire’s Farmstead Brewery To Open In May (Cazenovia, NY) — Empire Brewing’s much anticipated farmstead brewery passed a major milestone last week with the delivery and installation of a new 60BBL automated brewhouse. This project has been a labor of love for Empire’s David Katleski, who actively advocated on behalf of the New York State’s farm brewery legislation that became law in 2012, – and allowed him the necessary tax breaks to make this dream happen.
