The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – December 2, 2013

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates -things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed. So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were enjoying yourselves.

Lakefront Black Friday Draws Huge Crowds (Milwaukee, WI) – Where would you rather be on Black Friday…fighting the shopping-crazed masses at some soul-draining mall or drinking a special Black Friday Ale with like-minded pilgrims? According to jsonline.com, 350 craft beer fans answered that question by descending on Milwaukee’s Lakefront Brewery (some as early as midnight!) and partaking in our idea of the perfect way to celebrate “Black Friday.”

Craft Beer Critical to Restaurant Sales (Chicago, IL) – The dynamics of beer sales in restaurants and bars are evolving rapidly, and craft beer is a critical factor in driving the trends. According to a recent Technomic survey, more than half of consumers (56%) agree that it is important for a restaurant or bar to offer a wide variety of craft beers, and half (49%) say they will go to a particular establishment because of its craft beer selection,.

Nigerian Police Destroy 10,000 Cases of Beer! (Kano, Nigeria) – Talk about a major buzzkill. The AFP is reporting that “police enforcing Islamic law in Nigeria’s city of Kano publicly destroyed some 240,000 bottles of beer on Wednesday, the latest move in a wider crackdown on behavior deemed “immoral” in the area.”

Amsterdam Employs Alcoholics and Pays Them with Beer! (Amsterdam, Netherlands) – We can’t imagine that something like this is going to end well. First the good news –The Independent is reporting that a government project “paid for by Dutch state subsidies and donations, rounds up alcoholics who have been “causing a nuisance” in parks and puts them to work.” Now the bad – in addition to some money, theyalso receive “five cans of beer and half a packet of loose tobacco per shift.”

New Terrapin Stations in the Mid-Atlantic (Athens, GA) – Hot on the heels of the Terrapin Beer Company recently launching distribution in Washington, DC (as well as in Maryland earlier this year) comes word that they are not done with the Mid-Atlantic just yet. Beerpulse is reporting that the Athens-based brewery is “likely entering West Virginia in early 2014.”
