The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 3, 2015

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 3, 2015So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

Dogfish Head Dodges Big Beer (Milton, DE) – In a recent interview with the Denver Post’s Eric Gorski (a very decent beer scribe by the way) Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione disclosed that he’d received an acquisition overture from “the world’s biggest brewer” and that he’d declined to take that meeting… As we’d opined last week in Big Beer’s Strategy To Upend Craft Beer Corporate Beer is in the hunt to add prime craft breweries to their holdings …so were not surprised that they’d take a run at Sam and Mariah.

Cheap Beer And Baseball (Phoenix, AZ) – Yes, it can get hot. And yes the Arizona Diamondbacks are hardly league leaders – but in a world of insane stadium beer prices, the beer at Chase Field is among the lowest in professional baseball. A 14oz Bud goes for $4 buck there according to the Team Marketing Report, which doesn’t suck for generic.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 3, 2015High Taxes Are Hurting American Brewers (Washington, DC) – That’s what Boston Beer’s Jim Koch told a Senate subcommittee last Thursday – and we agree with him. The WSJ is reporting that almost 90 percent of “American beers” now being produced by foreign companies, which puts American-based companies like Boston Beer at a competitive disadvantage and also encourages foreign takeovers. Koch told Senate representatives that “a dollar of pretax earnings in the U.S. is worth 62 cents under American ownership, but 72 cents under foreign ownership.” Could that have been a factor in Firestone Walker new alignment with Duvel Moortgat? We think the answer is obvious.

Beer Is This Burglar’s Downfall (Lake Worth, FL) – A Florida family recently returned from a trip to the beach, only to find and unknown man asleep on the couch and empty beer bottles everywhere. According to the Palm Beach Post, Jacob Miller, 22, was found with some of the family’s jewelry in his possession and placed under arrest on charges of burglary and theft. A mug shot for Miller was not immediately available, not that we care.

Michigan’s Beer Numbers (Lansing, MI) – Beer is big business in Michigan according to a new report that the NBWA and Beer Institute put out last week. The state is #8 in total beer related jobs including those in brewing, wholesaling and retailing. It employs 35,551 people and we’re happy for them.
