The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 25, 2014

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates -things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 25, 2014Craft Beer Border Crossing (Guadalajara, Mexico) – Like many sectors of Mexico’s economy, the beer industry has long been dominated by Big Beer. The two mega-breweries, Grupo Modelo and Cuauhtemoc-Moctezuma, control 98 percent of the market, but according to a 2013 US Department of Agriculture report, things are changing. Mexican craft beer, though still in its infancy, is beginning to claim marketshare. Mexican craft breweries currently account “for less than one percent,” according to a report filed by Aljazeera, but “their combined market share is growing rapidly by 50 to 60 percent a year.”

Distribution Dance (Everywhere, USA) – After a five-year hiatus, Allagash Brewing is returning to Western and Central New York State today. Boulevard Brewing will be landing in the Greater Philadelphia area in October. SweetWater Brewing is bringing their brand into the Mississippi marketplace in early September and Deschutes will be entering Michigan starting on October 6. Whew!

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 25, 2014Lone Star Expands Its Craft Beer Galaxy (Carrollton, TX) – Our favorite North Texas craft beer bottle shop owners are expanding their business concept soon, and we couldn’t be happier for them. After the success of their flagship store Lone Star Beverages, where we’ve had the pleasure of spending lots of time, the newest venture for father/son duo Sam and Rick Ali will be Lone Star Taps & Caps, a joint growler and bottle shop that’s scheduled to open in Lewisville this fall. Offering a 50-tap bar and growler filling station, plus more than 500 additional unique brews to choose from, add this to your itinerary the next time you’re traveling to the Lone Star state.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 25, 2014Possible Beer Caves Discovered! (Cedar Rapids, IA) – C’mon how can we not run with this? The Gazette is reporting that a routine bridge inspection in Cedar Rapids has led to the discovery of “large underground caverns believed to be long-forgotten beer caves — subterranean rooms brewers used for cooling and aging beer before refrigeration.”

Join The AHA and Maybe Win A Trip to the GABF (Boulder, CO) – Our friends at the American Homebrewers Association wanted our readers to know that if they join or renew their membership with the AHA in August–and enter coupon code GABF14 when doing so–they will have the chance to win a special prize package for the sold-out Great American Beer Festival that’s taking place October 2-4 in Denver. The winner will receive two free tickets to the event, free airfare, and a free hotel stay for three nights, which is a pretty sweet deal if you ask us.
