THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER- QUICK HITS – August 19, 2013

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed. So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were enjoying yourselves.

Malt Liquor Leads to Most ER Visits (Baltimore, MD) – We don’t know if we should be surprised by this finding or not. DoctorsLounge is reporting that “five brands accounted for the largest amounts of beer consumed by people before they were treated for injuries at an emergency department in a large U.S. city, according to a new pilot study” and that of the five brands (Budweiser, Steel Reserve, Colt 45, Bud Ice, and Bud Light), three are a type of malt liquor. Published online in the journal Substance Use and Misuse, the study is thought to be the first to assess injured ER patients’ alcohol consumption by beer brand and type.

Ninkasi Goes to LA-LA Land (Eugene, OR) – Looks like Oregon’s third-largest producer of craft beer is going Hollywood! Named after the Sumerian goddess of beer, the Ninkasi Brewing Company has announced that beginning this month, they’ll be bringing their beers to Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties.

Pacific Northwest Drugstore Now Filling Growlers (Seattle, WA) – Next time you visit a specific Bartell Drugs in Seattle and pick up a script for something that “ails you,” you can also get your growler filled at the same time. Growler fills are now common in convenience stores throughout the region – but a drugstore selling craft beer is something entirely new. “The spokeswoman said the local chain has no plans to add growler stations at other stores,” reports the Seattle Times, “but will consider it for new store openings if the demographic is right.” In this case, the demos were super-right, as this store is actually located on Amazon’s business campus!

, THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER- QUICK HITS – August 19, 2013We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat! (Narragansett, RI) – That’s one of American films’ most iconic catchphrases and it comes from Stephen Spielberg’s 1975 classic thriller “Jaws.” Equally iconic in the film was the scene in which Captain Sam Quint, played by Robert Shaw, crushes a can of Narragansett Lager to intimidate Richard Dreyfuss’s character. The Boston Globe is reporting that the brewery is now re-releasing commemorative cans with that original design.

Possible Peace Pipe in the Wolverine State? (Lansing, MI) – It appears that there may be some movement between Michigan craft brewers and beer distributors on proposals to loosen brewery and brewpub restrictions, according to Mlive.com. House Bill 4709 would increase the barrel limit for microbrewers from 30,000 to 60,000 barrels. HB 4710 would allow brewpubs to have an interest in five other brewpubs as long as their combined production stays below 18,000 barrels per year. HB 4711 would allow brewers to sell their beer for on-premise consumption at two brewery locations – current law allows for only one.
