The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 10, 2015

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 10, 2015So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

ACB On The Town (Reston, VA) – We’d like to thank, Evan Maltz, Heather Maltz, Jeremy Sundheimer, and the whole World of Beer Northern Virginia crew, for having us out last Friday to join Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione at a special beer dinner. Sam brought in a full array of his food-friendly exotics and each beer was carefully paired with a World of Beer artisan tavern offerings. But the highlight of the evening was the retail debut of Dogfish Head’s Choc Lobster -a 5.6% dry Porter brewed with basil, dark cocoa and lobsters – and WOB is one of the few places in the country that have it. It was an insanely enjoyable evening – wonderful people, unbelievable food and incredible beer. And were not apologizing for having had too much fun.

Best Beer In The World?  (Belgium) – One of the 10 Trappist monasteries that produce beer, the Trappist monks at The Abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren, are the smallest producers of the lot. And although they brew only enough beer to support themselves and their abbey, they have commanded the world’s respect. Some consider these monks among the best brewers in the world a Business Insider did a wonderful profile on them last Friday that you can read here.

Beer Is This Burglar’s Downfall (Lake Worth, FL) – A Florida family recently returned from a trip to the beach, only to find and unknown man asleep on the couch and empty beer bottles everywhere. According to the Palm Beach Post, Jacob Miller, 22, was found with some of the family’s jewelry in his possession and placed under arrest on charges of burglary and theft. A mug shot for Miller was not immediately available, not that we care.

Where is Craft Beer Growing The Most? (USA) – Nielsen recently released an interesting new study that highlighted the new breakout markets for craft beer at retail. , The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – August 10, 2015The study looked at both dollar and volume rankings – and the volume increases in alone where mind-blowing. The city that showed the biggest increase by volume was Birmingham, Alabama which grew an amazing 63.1%, followed by Cincinnati (27.5%), Cleveland (23.5%), San Diego (22.5%), and Des Moines (20.2%).

Knee Deep’s Founder Bolts (Auburn, CA) – This happens sometimes – a brewery flourishes – but one its founders (and in this case its head brewer) – feels stifled and looks for new opportunities. That’s why Jeremy Warren is leaving the highly successful Knee Deep Brewing (now in 16 states). But according to the Sacramento Bee, he’s planning to launch a new brewery where he can explore his growing passion for barrel – aged beers and sours.
