THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITS – February 18, 2013

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed. So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were enjoying your weekend.

Bad Deeds Done Badly (Fort Collins, CO) – Police arrested 26-year-old Adam James Dickinson in Fort Collins on Thursday after thousands of dollars worth of rare and vintage beers were reported stolen from Avery Brewing Company in Boulder. Dickinson was a former employee of Avery from March 2012 until October 2012, when he was terminated. 9News.com is reporting that a manager at Avery Brewing suspected that Dickinson was responsible for the thefts of the rare beer. They go on to report that “Some of the bottled beer was worth $200 to $300 per bottle. More than 570 bottles were recovered during a search warrant executed at the suspect’s home in Fort Collins, and included several cases of Isabelle Proximus beer ($200/bottle), bottles of Duck Gooze beer ($100/bottle), bottles of Rogue Old Crustacean beer ($100/bottle), and one bottle of 2001 Rogue Old Crustacean Barley Wine ($100/bottle). Police say Dickinson had sold some of the stolen beer on eBay and had also offered some stolen bottles to a new employer, who cooperated with the investigation. ”

Black Raven Getting Bigger (Redmond, WA)Black Raven Brewing has just announced that they’ll soon be getting bigger and will be almost tripling the capacity of their much-beloved operation in the coming year. Owner & Head Brewer Beaux Bowman explains the planned growth. “Our brewery has been producing at 100% capacity since opening in 2009. Each year has brought expansion of capacity but demand has continued to outpace supply. By the end of 2013, we expect to be able to finally clear our waiting list of new accounts.”

, THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITS – February 18, 2013Craft Beer Fans Bring Down Online Ticket Service (Grand Rapids, MI) – In an effort to solve the problems surrounding high demand, limited-release beers, brewers are turning to online ticket sellers such as Ticketmaster and Live Nation to help ease the process. Unfortunately, the results have been mixed at best. According to our friends at beerpulse, Founders Brewing Company turned to Brown Paper Tickets to issue tickets for next month’s Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) release and the traffic was so overwhelming that the site went down!

Florida Politicians threaten to do the Right Thing! (Tallahassee, FL) – In what many consider a shocking departure from form, Florida legislators are poised to introduce a bill that might actually help the state’s populace. The Herald Tribune writes that the bill (HB 715) would allow brew pubs to sell 64-ounce growlers throughout the “Sunshine State.” Currently state law prohibits beer containers over 32 ounces, unless they are gallon sized.

Boston Beer to New Zealand (Auckland, NZ) – For more than a decade, Samuel Adams beers have been winners at New Zealand’s annual international beer awards. And now The Boston Beer Company will be expanding their distribution to New Zealand, according to Stuff.co.nz.
