The 2012 World Beer Cup Take-Aways

"If there are any doubts that the United States is the world leader in the craft beer industry, the May 5 results of the World Beer Cup in San Diego should remove them."
Here are some interesting factoids that USA Today compiled from this year's event:
•799 breweries and brewpubs entered from 54 countries.
•284 awards were handed out.
•The United States took 208 medals- 20 other countries won the remaining 76 awards.
•67% of the judges came from countries other the U.S.
•U.S. breweries and brewpubs dominated nearly every category.
•There were 18 British-style categories-Not a single United Kingdom beer won an award- U.S. brewer's took 49 of the 54 possible medals.
•In the Belgian-style categories U.S. breweries won seven of 11 gold medals and took 22 of the total 33 possible Belgian-style medals overall.

According to USA Today some categories naturally favored us:
It's also important to remember that of the 95 categories, 20 were for "American-Style" beers, such as "American-Style Wheat" and "American-Style India Pale Ale." So 60 of the U.S. medals were specific to beer styles that originate in the U.S.
A complete list of this year's winners can be found on the World Beer Cup website.
