SAVOR 2014 – Friday Night Salon Life

One of the things that we enjoy about SAVOR, in addition to the beers themselves and the wonderful foods offered to pair with them, are the unique Salon opportunities occurring nightly. These carefully curated Salons allow attendees a quiet respite from the Grand Tasting in the National Building Museum’s Great Hall and a private space where they can learn more about brewing techniques and sample “special reserve” beers with some of the industry’s masters.

SAVOR offers both private Tasting Salons, which are set in a comfortable lounge environment and limited to no more than thirty people, and what they call Educational Salons, which are limited to 90 people and take place in more of a classroom/auditorium setting.

Admission to these individual Salons requires a separate ticket purchase on top of the General Admission ticket but affords a wonderful occasion to drink with and learn from some of craft beer’s biggest names.

The SAVOR Salons offered each night are as impressive as they are diverse. And as there are so many to choose from, we thought it might be best to highlight each evening’s events separately.

So here are just some of the Salons being presented on Friday Night that caught our attention…

, SAVOR 2014 – Friday Night Salon LifeBarrel Aging with Jim Koch

6:15-7:15 pm

Presenters: Jim Koch, Boston Beer

How can you say no to joining a legend like Samuel Adams founder and brewmaster Jim Koch and learning about their barrel-aging program? Plus you’ll be sampling all kinds of beers from the Boston Beer barrel room collection, including the 1993 edition of Triple Bock……plzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

West Coast IPAs & San Diego Craft Culture

6:15-7:15 pm

Presenters: Ryan Brooks, Coronado Brewing Company; Steve Wagner, Stone Brewing Co.; Chuck Silva, Green Flash Brewing Co

For many, the West Coast IPA has defined the American craft beer scene and this salon brings together three of the top five craft brewing companies (by volume) in San Diego who are pioneers in the style.

, SAVOR 2014 – Friday Night Salon LifeCraftBeer.com Taste Off: Wild, Wild Yeast

8:00-9:00 pm

Presenters: Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon); Rob Tod, Allagash Brewing Company; Jennifer Glanville, Boston Beer; and Phil Wymore, Perennial Artisan Ales

This event is an Educational Salon – it’s a larger gathering (up to 90 attendees) that takes place in more of an auditorium setting – and sounds awesome. Join Julia Herz, publisher of CraftBeer.com, as she moderates a taste off. Here’s how it will work: One succulent food item will be presented and each panelist will be tasked with pairing it with a beer featuring wild yeast. Attendees will decide who did the best job and crown this year’s taste-off champion. And here’s the hook: the audience judges will not know the brands of the beers being sampled until after the votes are in!
