Newbies – New Releases That You Want to Look Out For

So many beers, So little time…One of this year’s best Oktoberfest releases comes from a brewery not commonly associated with craft beer. We’ve got that for you – plus some serious new offerings from Epic and Saint Arnold Brewing that you’ll want to track down.

, Newbies – New Releases That You Want to Look Out ForA Road Less Taken (Frederick, MD) – Not every brewing experiment requires super-obscure ingredients or the unearthing of long-lost ancient styles – and Flying Dog Brewery more than proves that with an interesting new release. Flying Dog’s goal in brewing their late summer/early fall seasonal was to develop a wheat beer that wasn’t dominated by its yeast strain – and we think they nailed it. Part of their popular Brewhouse Rarities Series, Flying Dog Hoppy American Wheat Ale is a bright and citrusy 5.5% ABV transition beer that rethinks how a wheat beer can taste.

Big + Bad= Brilliant (Salt Lake City, UT) – Epic Brewing’s newest edition to their popular Exponential Series is rolling out now – so be ready. Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout #35 is a massive barrel-aged imperial with coffee added. Clocking in at an almost irresponsible 12.4% ABV – this Baptist is what it is and making no apologies.

, Newbies – New Releases That You Want to Look Out ForOut of Their Gourd (Houston, TX) – Saint Arnold Brewing is returning a seasonal favorite that was originally brewed as Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No. 9. The winner of a silver medal at the 2012 World Beer Cup, Saint Arnold Pumpkinator is a massive 10% ABV Imperial Stout Pumpkin Ale brewed using 800 lbs of fresh pumpkin puree. It’s available now in 22 oz. bombers as well as on draft throughout Texas, Louisiana, and select markets along the Gulf Coast of Florida.

, Newbies – New Releases That You Want to Look Out ForGetting Reacquainted (Chicago, IL) – We attended a special Cochon 555 cuisine competition that Goose Island sponsored in DC over the weekend. And while hanging out with Goose Island folks, we rediscovered a beer that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Sofie is their classic 6.5% ABV Belgian-style Farmhouse Ale that’s brewed with an abundance of hand-zested orange peel. Lighter and more effervescent than most Farmhouse Ales, Sofie is a beer that we hadn’t enjoyed for a while – and that was a mistake.

Oktoberfest Sleeper (Shiner, TX) – We get advanced a lot of Oktoberfest beers at this time and we appreciate the opportunity to sample all of them – and one of our favorites comes from a small town in Texas. Brewed by the fine folks at the Spoetzl Brewery, the 5.7% ABV Shiner Oktoberfest is an award-winning special-edition Märzen-style ale that’s rich, dry, and perfect for this time of year.
