Hops Lip Balm?

Growing up in the 90s, there were a few things that made you really cool. Shoes that lit up, the newest Megazord action figure from Power Rangers, footballs that whistled when you threw them – all of these things were, like, totally cool. But if you wanted to show everyone just how cool you were, you would wear every last tube of Lip Smackers you owned around your neck.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Lip Smackers, it is a brand of lip balm that ranged in flavor from lemon to frosted cupcake, and girls actually wore these on a string around their neck. These tubed atrocities never actually smelled or tasted like they were supposed to and always ended up being a total letdown. So imagine my horror when I came across hops lip balm. It couldn’t possibly be good, could it?

Wrong. It is awesome.

Atlantic Farms Hops Lip Balms are some of the most surprising and refreshingly pleasant beer-related products I’ve come across in a while. My relatively grim expectations were blown away when I opened the first, beautifully packaged tube. These super fun lip treats come in four different flavors: Grapefruit, Double IPA, Lavender, and Mint. Each of the four is very aromatic, but none of them are overwhelming or particularly gender specific. Also, they all taste pretty good! My favorites are the Double IPA and the Grapefruit, mostly because those are the two that smell the most like the Cascade and Chinook hops used to make them.

When the hops are blooming in New York, Matthew Gorton and Mathew Sabatino harvest these oil-rich flowers from their own gardens. From there, I imagine they use some sort of hop-voodoo magic to turn them into these fantastic lip-soothing wonders. Since I got these in the mail, I’ve had one parked in my pocket everywhere I go, and the confusion and excitement on people’s faces isn’t a bad bonus. I love to share my passion of all things craft beer, and since I feel hops are still very misunderstood, having this simple way to help people better understand and appreciate these fabulous flowers is really cool.
