A “Not Holiday” Newbies

Need a break from all those “Winter Warmers” that have been coming out lately? We absolutely do – and we’ve assembled some exciting new releases from breweries like Sierra Nevada and Lakewood Brewing that thankfully aren’t spiced out of their minds…

, A “Not Holiday” NewbiesMedusa’s Fruit (Chico, CA) – The final beer in Sierra Nevada’s five-bottle 2014 Harvest Series heads out this week and we’re pretty psyched about it. Sierra Nevada Harvest Wild Hop IPA is the first nationwide Pale Ale release to showcase the wild Neomexicanus hop. Aptly nicknamed “Medusa” (a nod to the hop’s multiple heads), Neomexicanus was first discovered in the foothills of Taos, New Mexico, and the hop is said to deliver an effervescent melon, apricot, and citrus nose.

A Year to Remember (Dublin, Ireland) – One of the world’s oldest and most renowned international brewers has something special up its sleeve this season. Guinness The 1759 is a limited-edition 9% ABV Amber Ale. Based on a 200-year-old recipe, this high gravity ale was brewed using a blend of traditional beer malt and peated whisky malt. “The 1759” is named for the year that Arthur Guinness signed the lease and secured his iconic St. James’s Gate brewery in Dublin and comes beautifully packaged in a 25 oz. bottle.

, A “Not Holiday” NewbiesThe Chris Robinson Brotherhood Collaborates (San Francisco, CA) – Anchor Brewing and the Chris Robinson Brotherhood have brewed up a beer together. Inspired by CRB’s songcraft and the brewery’s flagship, Anchor Steam, Brotherhood Steam Beer is a 5.6% ABV “Extra Special Lager” (ESL). The band refers to it as “Gig Beer” – a copper-colored refresher with aromatic hints of citrus, mint, and a fresh hop finish. For a limited time, “Brotherhood Steam” will be poured at select Chris Robinson Brotherhood shows and will also be available in 6-pack cans in select markets nationwide starting in early December.

The Temptress Returns (Garland, TX) – Lakewood Brewing’s media goddess, Carrie Kelly, just alerted us that one of our favorite beers on the whole planet will be returning in December. Lakewood Bourbon Barrel Temptress is a massive Imperial Milk Stout, aged in freshly emptied Bourbon barrels for over 5 months. This boozy and smooth temptress hints at vanilla, oak, toffee, caramel, roasted coffee, and sin and is apologizing for none of it.

, A “Not Holiday” NewbiesDisguised (Escondido, CA) – Just when you thought that craft beer styles had been pushed to the limit – they do this! Taking their lead from an April Fool’s Day joke concocted by Stone’s Greg Koch and BrewDog’s James Watt – Stone’s Stochasticity Project has actually brewed what they call a Golden Imperial Stout. Released just this week, the Stochasticity Project Master of Disguise is a 9.7% ABV Golden Ale that mimics the qualities of a stout. This is achieved by adding coffee in the whirlpool and also during post-fermentation to replicate the typically deep, roasted, and chocolate character that’s commonly associated with stouts.
