6 Spring Seasonals You Need To Seek Out

Sometimes the best things in life are hard to come by. Such an adage has never been more appropriate than with the growth of craft beer to every corner of the country. While we now have larger craft brewers distributing and/or setting up shop cross- country, we also have hundreds of new beers being born every year, often with limited or even no distribution, nor the resulting ballyhoo.

Monday we detailed 10 well known spring offerings that come primarily from nationally available brewers and yesterday we covered the classic spring style in the Maibock, so it only seemed appropriate to give equal time to some of those smaller regional favorites as well. And just like those mid-summer released pumpkin beers, many of these beauties have already been available since February, meaning that you’ve only a short time to get them while you can!

, 6 Spring Seasonals You Need To Seek OutLazy Magnolia Brewery, Lazy Saison (Kiln, MS) – While Mississippi’s oldest brewery is currently distributed in 16 states, we’ve yet to sample their widely heralded beer. One we found particularly appealing, on the recommendation of the Brewers Association, is this “Southern Cultivated” yet Belgian-inspired ale displaying classic floral and fruity aromas balanced by pepper and a dry, crisp finish. 5.3% ABV. Available Now.

Golden Road Brewing, 2020 IPA (Los Angeles, CA) – While only in existence 4 years, LA’s Golden Road has established themselves as one of the best brewers in the Southland, producing a wide range of excellent IPAs. Their latest is a dark red IPA with a rich pine aroma, lightly roasted and balanced by a hearty hop bitterness. It also raises funds for a local cause, with this one being the Greenway 2020 project to convert the concrete LA River into a public green space. 7.4% ABV, available February-April.

, 6 Spring Seasonals You Need To Seek OutTwo Roads Brewing, Rye 95 (Stratford, CT) – This 9.5% ABV Tripel Blond Ale provides an excellent balancing act between the fruity sweet esters of a tripel with the dry flavor and aroma coming from the rye. Further complexity comes in to play with their addition of Mosaic and Amarillo hops providing flavors of white wine, blueberries and fruit punch. Last year’s silver medal winner at GABF for Belgian Specialty, it’s hard to make a wrong turn with Two Roads. Available Feburary – April.

Fort George Brewing, Omegatex (Astoria, OR) – This Friday Fort George celebrates their 8th anniversary with the first bottle distribution of their big seasonal double IPA. While the brewers themselves admit this beer isn’t for everyone – being that it weighs in at a hefty 9.9% ABV with a sturdy caramel malt character and brimming with Summit and Cascade Hop delights, we’ve actually been counting down the days until this special release. Available March 27th in Astoria, in NW bottle shops come April.

Dark Horse Brewing, Thirsty Trout Porter (Marshall, MI) – How can you not love a brewery who greets all who visit their site with “Making bad ass beer in Marshall, MI?” They already had us locked in with our first taste of their decadent Scotty Karate Scotch Ale, yet their winter/spring seasonal Porter is as good if not better. It provides a rich aroma of chocolate malts and coffee beans, vast flavors of caramel, some nutty and fruit notes, then finished off with floral hops. 7% ABV, Available November – April.

, 6 Spring Seasonals You Need To Seek OutZipline Brewing, India Red Ale (Lincoln, NE) – I can’t recall a time we ever had something we didn’t love coming from this smaller brewer in the heart of Nebraska. Their IRA is hopped with Centennial, Chinook, Cascade and Nugget hops as well as 5 varieties of malt. We love that it buffers us from the colder days of winter, while preparing us for the hop heavy days of the summer all in a dual purpose, beautifully red hued IRA. 7.1% ABV, 65 IBU. Available February – April.
