Today is St. Patrick’s Day. We’ve been drinking since breakfast and suggest you show some support for this important holiday as well. And in keeping with today, we will only be highlighting St. Patrick’s Day sanctioned beers for you to peruse…and yes, you can thank the Irish for that.
Blasting Blarney – (Frederick, MD) – Flying Dog claims their popular early spring seasonal is brewed with specially picked four-leaf clovers (not that we’re buying that). Lucky SOB Irish Redis a 5.5% ABV malt-forward “blast of the blarney” that’s more than appropriate for today’s festivities.
Going Erin Go Bragh (Kansas City, MO) – Boulevard Brewing’sIrish Ale is their Midwestern tribute to the legendary red ales of old Ireland. Brewed using six kinds of pale and roasted barley malts to provide a super-rich, toasty flavor, this beloved seasonal pours deep amber, and rings true to the tradition.
A Scottish St. Paddy’s Day Brew (Edinburgh, Scotland) – Innis & Gunn is a Scottish brewer known for maturing ALL their beers with oak – and they took things to an interesting new level with a recent release. Innis & Gunn Irish Whiskey Stout is a 7.4% ABV Scottish-style Stout that’s matured with whiskey-infused oak in something they call “Oakerators” (think coffee percolator). Hey we get that these guys are Scotts but this beer was clearly brewed with St. Patrick’s Day in mind – and you should keep it in mind as well.
Irish American (Brooklyn, NY) – The impact and influence of the Irish American community on New York City and its history can’t be underestimated. So it’s little surprise that one of craft beer’s best examples of the true Irish Stout would come from Brooklyn Brewery. Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout is a 4.7% ABV American take on the “Dry Stout” tradition that lets the malts do all the talking.
Homage to a Great Lakes Legend (Cleveland, OH) – Great Lakes Brewing‘s Irish Ale pays homage to Patrick Conway, grandfather of Great Lakes co-owners Patrick and Daniel, a Cleveland policeman who directed traffic near the brewery for nearly 25 years.Conway’s Irish Aleis a big 6.5% ABV late winter seasonal that gets things done right.
